Health officials on Tuesday said they recorded 14 fresh cases of dengue onslaughts in the past 24 hours. "We recorded 14 fresh cases of dengue onslaughts in 24 hours ending at 8am today," a spokesman of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said. "Out of the 14 fresh cases, nine were hospitalized in Barisal division, four in Khulna division and one in Rajshahi, a Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) statement said. The dengue last year claimed 413 lives and inflicted 1,02,861 people in the country. Besides, the dengue claimed 575 lives and inflicted 1,01,214 people in 2024.
Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton has accused the administration of President Donald Trump of deliberately delaying the release of files linked to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, alleging a “cover-up” in their handling. Asked whether Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor should testify before a US congressional committee, Clinton said anyone asked to testify should do so. He has denied wrongdoing and settled a civil case in 2022 without admitting liability. Bangladesh Parliament Journalists Association (BPJA) has protested against restrictions imposed on journalists’ access to the oath-taking ceremony of elected members to the 13th National Parliament. In a statement, BPJA president Harun Jamil and general secretary Shawkat Ali Khan Litho condemned the decision to limit media entry to the swearing-in programme. The statement said the National Parliament is the centre of democratic practice in the country, emphasizing that its relationship with journalists is inseparable. Leaders of the Bangladesh Parliamentary Journalists Association (BPJA) held several meetings with the authorities, requesting that journalists be allowed to cover the swearing-in ceremony, in line with established practice. As a result, journalists were unable to cover the historic oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected Members of Parliament.
Iran and the United States began fresh talks in Geneva on Tuesday, as President Donald Trump warned of consequences should Tehran fail to strike a deal. Trump has repeatedly threatened to intervene militarily against Iran, first over a deadly crackdown on protesters last month and then more recently over its nuclear program. “I don’t think they want the consequences of not making a deal,” he told reporters aboard Air Force One ahead of the talks. A previous attempt at diplomacy collapsed when Israel launched surprise strikes on Iran in June, beginning a 12-day war that Washington briefly joined to bomb Iranian nuclear sites. Iranian state TV reported on Tuesday that the indirect talks had begun with the two sides exchanging messages through Omani mediators.
