October weather in Moscow is distinctly autumnal, rapidly transitioning to early winter conditions by the end of the month. Wearing a full-sleeved black woollen sweater, I stood under an umbrella in a long queue after collecting my entry ticket to the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. The Pushkin Museum also displays significant works by leading European artists such as Rubens, Rembrandt, Botticelli, El Greco, Poussin, and Watteau. Some 26 of the museum’s galleries are dedicated to a wide-ranging collection of works by master painters of the 19th and 20th centuries. Visitors can also admire masterpieces such as Bacchanalia by Peter Paul Rubens, the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition.

CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland — A fire that tore through a bar at a Swiss ski resort killing at least 40 people likely started when "fountain candle" sparklers were held aloft too close to the ceiling, the region's chief prosecutor said on Friday. The Valais canton's chief prosecutor, Beatrice Pilloud, said the sparklers were a leading line of enquiry that looked to be firming up. "Everything suggests that the fire started from the burning sparklers ... that had been attached to champagne bottles and were moved too close to the ceiling," Pilloud told a news conference. Jacques Moretti, one of the owners of the bar, told Swiss and Italian media on Friday that the renovations had been carried out "in accordance with regulations." He told Swiss newspaper ‍Tribune de Geneve that the establishment had been inspected not annually but three times over the past 10 years.

A year ago, Zohran Mamdani was a backbench state assemblyman who had just launched a bid for New York City mayor that many saw as a long shot because of his unabashed left-wing politics. The oath was administered by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who, like Mamdani, is a democratic socialist and is seen as a grandfather for the modern American left. Having promised to make the city more affordable for working-class communities, Mamdani is entering office with high expectations on his shoulders. But in his inaugural speech, Mamdani reaffirmed he remains committed to all of his agenda items, including taxing millionaires at a higher rate, and vowed not to water down his messaging or promises. Despite the tensions, Mamdani offered Adams thanks during his inaugural speech, drawing boos from the crowd.
