African Parks, a private Johannesburg-based conservation NGO that manages 22 protected areas in partnership with 12 governments across Africa, confirmed on Monday, 4 September that it had “stepped in as the new owner of the world’s largest private captive rhino breeding operation”, the Platinum Rhino project, a 7,800-hectare property in North West. African Parks – without disclosing any of the financial arrangements of the deal – said it had agreed to purchase the farm and all 2,000 southern white rhino with one clear objective: “To rewild these rhino over the next 10 years to well-managed and secure areas, establishing or supplementing strategic populations, thereby de-risking the future of the species”. The project was started by Hume, a wealthy property developer turned wildlife rancher who has earned both opprobrium and praise for his decades-old initiative to breed rhinos, harvest their horns without harming them physically and then sell the horns to buyers in the Far East. BeIN Sports has held the rights since 2017CAF terminated US$1bn contract with Lagardère Sports in 2019The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has terminated its 12-year, US$415 million broadcast contract with BeIN Sports with immediate effect. Included are the rights to CAF’s international and club soccer tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the Champions League. This means CAF could be forced to pay out compensation if its own claim isn’t successful. BeIN Sport, whose rights were originally sourced through the deal with Lagardère, opted to continue its arrangement and assumed the position of principal broadcaster. The cancellation of the Lagardère deal accelerated growing ties between CAF and Fifa, with some believing the influence of the latter on the former has become disproportionately strong.

These depictions of Niger, Sudan and other African states as mere backdrops to geopolitical conflicts between distant outsiders frequently neglect the role played by regional institutions, neighboring states and nonstate actors, portraying them as secondary players if at all. Elsewhere in Africa, the jockeying for position among regional states around conflicts in eastern Congo and Sudan have had more far-reaching impacts on escalation dynamics than any U.S. diplomatic initiative or Russian arms shipments. Interpreting every geopolitical crisis in the context of great power conflict often distracts from wider regional trends that will ultimately have a global impact of their own. The rapidly deteriorating security situation across West Africa is a case in point. Paris’ effort to maintain a neo-imperial sphere of influence in partnership with regional autocrats has certainly played a crucial role in generating social instability.

The term “Mediterranean Diet” — Attibakha al-Moutaouassittiya in Arabic — is popularly used internationally to describe a form of healthy eating drawn from the traditional foodways of the Mediterranean region. Of the seven countries that nominated the diet to UNESCO and therefore emblematic of the diet, the only North African country listed was Morocco. Couscous proves how the North African origins of Mediterranean cuisine have been dissolved into a diet attributed to Europe. Israeli couscous, though popular on Mediterranean diet websites, isn’t actually couscous at all. Irrespective of how the term is applied, it is essential that we remember that Mediterranean food is also North African food.

A research group led by the Al-Azhar University in Egypt has designed a photovoltaic water pumping system (PVWPS) that can be used to supply water for domestic use, irrigation, livestock watering, and village water supply. Used mainly for irrigation, PV-powered water pumps are a viable alternative to diesel-powered water pumps in remote areas. ”The academics also calculated the overall system efficiency by splitting the system output (hydraulic power) by the system input (solar radiation power), or by multiplying the efficiencies of all system components. “The overall efficiency of the system is directly affected by solar radiation, but when solar radiation exceeds 900 W/m2 at noon, this is accompanied by an increase in temperature, which negatively affects the efficiency of the solar panels and thus the overall system efficiency,” they emphasized. “The design of the solar water pumping system goes through several stages, and some information such as daily water consumption, static water level, and the pumping pipes length and diameter must be known,” it specified.

Kenya’s government has partnered with an electric motorbike manufacturer in a bid to introduce more than a million electric vehicles (EVs) throughout the East African country. Increasing electric vehicle adoption in KenyaSpiro, launched last year, has so far introduced nearly 10,000 electric bikes in Benin, Togo, Rwanda and Uganda. Kenya Power’s E-Mobility Conference Report, released earlier this year, said that currently, only 5% (1,350) of newly registered vehicles in Kenya are electric, with electric motorcycles accounting for 844 and three-wheelers 153. The report said that Kenya intends to increase electric mobility adoption and has set a target of 2025 as the year by which 5% of all newly registered vehicles will be electric. PHOTO/US DEPARTMENT OF STATE - US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for North Africa Joshua Harris"My purpose in visiting Tindouf was to express the sincerity of my government's commitment to support the United Nations political process to achieve a permanent and dignified political solution in Western Sahara," said Joshua Harris. The delegation led by Joshua Harris also expressed the clear idea that the success of the political process for peace and a solution to the Saharawi conflict depends on a series of conditions, including a ceasefire in the region. Thus, the main objective of the visit was to get the Polisario Front to agree to a military ceasefire. A resolution to the Western Sahara conflict is still awaited, although it is unlikely to come before the end of Joe Biden's presidential term, as the problem has been entrenched for more than four decades since Spain left the territory to end the colonial era. The North African country's proposal has received significant international support, including from the United States, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Germany and Spain itself.

Russia – Morocco Bilateral TradeMorocco is Russia’s third biggest trade partner among the countries of the African continent after Egypt and Algeria. The main advantage for companies opening production in Morocco, is the possibility of further export to the countries that Morocco has free trade zone agreements with. Although Russia does not yet have free trade agreements with African countries there are signs that this might be changing. Russia – Morocco Bilateral InvestmentsRussian investments in Morocco are lagging behind its major competitors such the EU, US, and China. Nonetheless, the trade and investment dynamics between Russia and Morocco are on an upward trajectory, while a pending FTA with the EAEU will further enhance bilateral trade volumes.

Two former executives at a Swedish oil company Lundin Oil are going on trial on Tuesday (5 September), with both defendants accused of complicity in war crimes in present-day South Sudan, with prosecutors saying both were complicit in atrocities by Sudanese army and militias between 1999 and 2003, which both flatly deny. Swiss national Alex Schneiter and Swedish Ian Lundin are charged with complicity in war crimes committed over 20 years ago in what is now South Sudan. Prosecutors say the then Lundin Oil – which has since changed its name several times and in 2022 sold most of its business – asked Khartoum to secure a potential oilfield in what is now South Sudan, knowing this would mean seizing the area by force. Between 1999 and 2003, following Lundin’s discovery of an oil deposit, the Sudanese army and allied militias carried out large-scale military operations to control this area “and create the necessary conditions for oil extraction”, the Swedish prosecutor’s office said in a statement published in mid-August. The prosecutors also argue that the two former executives were complicit because they knew Sudan’s government would take control of the area by “military force” that is vividly described as “aerial bombardments from transport planes, shooting civilians from helicopter gunships, abducting and plundering civilians and burning entire villages and their crops.” The trial, which is expected to be the biggest of its kind in Sweden’s history, and will likely be watched far beyond the country’s borders, follows a 13-year investigation culminating in findings over 80,000 pages.
