Eni has launched Coral North, the second floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility to be deployed in the Rovuma Basin waters, offshore Cabo Delgado, north of Mozambique, and will bring to production the gas from the northern part of Coral gas reservoir. With a 3.6 MTPA liquefaction capacity, Coral North will double Mozambique’s total LNG output to 7 MTPA. This will position the country as Africa’s third-largest LNG producer and exporter, strengthening its role as a key player in the global energy market. Coral North is expected to more than double economic impact for Mozambique, including revenues from LNG, a boost to local industry, and the creation of new jobs. Coral North will also expand investments in local development initiatives.

European Union crisis management commissioner Hadja Lahbib announced at the Davos Forum (19-24 January) that the EU would spend €1.9 billion on humanitarian aid, of which €557 million (US$658.6m) is for Africa. Contracting out aid provision and development policy to the private sector is at the heart of United States President Donald J Trump’s agenda (Dispatches, 8/12/25, Ruto moves adeptly to shore up ties with Washington). These cuts are expected to continue in 2026, dropping ODA to its lowest level since 2020 of around €160bn. But the real figures for aid to developing and least developed countries (LDCs) are much lower in reality. This is because billions of euros formally counted as ODA have been diverted support for Ukraine’s war and housing asylum seekers.

Libya’s state-owned National Oil Company (NOC) predicts that deepwater exploration in the Mediterranean will unlock new acreage and attract a wider range of international and national oil companies. This, according to the NOC, will set the stage for a major regional expansion of upstream activity while de-risking exploration and divining international interest. Announced by NOC Director of Exploration Abdulmonem Betikh during the Libya Energy & Economic Summit (LEES) in Tripoli, the comments underscore Libya’s push to revive exploration of deep offshore targets and accelerate production growth across the region. “Production is going to be increased significantly in the coming years, driven primarily by the bid round and offshore exploration and development,” Al Nabhani stated. “One of the big drivers is to shorten the time between discovery and production,” he said.

Denver-based Newmont’s power over Barrick’s strategy is a significant change from a few years ago when the Canadian miner had hoped to buy Newmont’s minority stake in the Nevada mines. In an email response, Barrick said it respects the joint venture with Newmont and abides by all the terms. Newmont spokesperson said the company’s Nevada Gold Mines joint venture agreement has not changed from what is publicly available. Newmont’s say over the sale of the Nevada mines despite having only a minority stake in them is unusual, according to three executives aware of the restructuring efforts. On Friday shares of Barrick were trading up by 1.90% at the Toronto Stock Exchange and Newmont shares were trading up 1.52% at New York Stock Exchange.

Severe flooding across northern and eastern Tunisia has killed at least five people, left several others missing and damaged transport and public infrastructure after days of torrential rain, authorities said. Heavy rainfall that began late Monday triggered rapid flooding in several cities, submerging roads, paralyzing traffic and forcing the suspension of schools and public transport in wide parts of the country. Four of the deaths were recorded in Moknine, a coastal city in Monastir province, while a fifth person died in El Haouaria in neighbouring Nabeul province, according to official figures. Emergency teams are continuing search operations for four fishermen who went missing after their boat capsized off the Monastir coast. The flooding caused significant disruption to transport networks, including in the capital, Tunis, where waterlogged roads and tram lines led authorities to suspend public transport services in several districts.
