Sudan has dismissed all reports of Iran’s intention to establish a naval base on the country’s Red Sea coast, which comes at a time when the creation of the Russian Navy in the country has been postponed indefinitely due to the ongoing fighting. The WSJ also claimed that the Iranian military installation “would have allowed Tehran to monitor maritime traffic to and from the Suez Canal and Israel,” according to a senior Sudanese intelligence official. Sudan’s top diplomat denied these claims, saying that Iran has “never asked Sudan to establish a base there. “Due to the dissolution of parliament, the Sudanese side has not yet been able to complete the necessary internal ratification procedures,” Andrei Chernovol, Russian Ambassador to Sudan, said recently. Plans for the creation of Russian military infrastructure in Port Sudan have now been discussed for more than four years.

Once a month of joy and celebration, Ramadan this year has put the finances of ordinary Tunisians on strain as inflation bites, coupled with a shortage of basic goods and rampant unemployment. Tunisia’s February inflation was at 7.5% with prices set to further surge due to the high demand on foodstuff, particularly during the fasting month of Ramadan, according to the Tunisian national consumption institution (INC). As the government struggles to fill shelves, Tunisians, like their Algerian neighbors, are becoming used to queues and rationing of basic goods such as milk, flour, and sometimes coffee and fuel. The government is scapegoating hoarders for the foodstuff shortage in the domestic market. Economists are rather blaming the government’s failure to secure a deal with the IMF that would enable Tunisia to have a lifeline to continue to ensure availability of basic goods for ordinary citizens.

Niger is expected to increase its oil production five-fold thanks to a pipeline linking the country to Benin, which will start operating in April. Niger military ruler had announced that the initial shipment would take place in January this year but sources told S&P Global Commodity Insights that first oil deliveries will only take place in April. The lifting of sanctions by the ECOWAS on Niger enabled China National Petroleum Corporation to complete construction of the 2,000 km pipeline and crude was flowing through the conduit last week. The removal of sanctions ended restrictions such as the no-fly zone, border closures, and financial constraints on state assets, including Niger’s state-owned Sonidep. The pipeline would help Niger increase production from 20,000 barrels daily to 100,000 barrels, offering the landlocked country an export route.

Antonia Bothner, capital markets lead at Endeavor South Africa, once had a cushy job in the UK, investing in publicly traded stocks for a big pension fund. Bothner told episode 12 of Disrupt Africa’s “The month in VC” podcast series, released in partnership with Katapult Africa, Hlayisani Capital, Atlantica Ventures, and Endeavor South Africa, that though she is originally from South Africa, she ended up working in the UK investing in publicly traded stocks in emerging markets for a big pension fund. So when I came back to South Africa and had the opportunity to join Endeavor and they were launching a co-investment fund, I loved it,” Bothner said. Part of the global Endeavor network, Endeavor South Africa opened its doors in 2004, and currently has around 100 businesses in its portfolio. Endeavor, Bothner said, is something of an upside-down VC fund.
