Chief U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, of the District of Columbia, rejected the Justice Department’s bid to reconsider his earlier ruling, which had effectively halted the criminal probe into Powell. The subpoenas, issued by Washington D.C.’s top federal prosecutor Jeanine Pirro, a stalwart Trump ally, sought information about cost overruns in renovations at the Fed’s headquarters and Powell’s testimony to Congress last year about the project. The appeal could delay confirmation of Kevin Warsh, Trump’s pick to succeed Powell as Fed chair. Powell has pledged not to leave the central bank until the probe is over. Prosecutors have said they are investigating Powell for potential fraud charges and false statements to a congressional committee.

LOADING ERROR LOADINGWASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s war on Iran got considerably more complicated Friday after a U.S. fighter jet was shot down. Two Air Force crew members ejected from their F-15, causing the U.S. to launch a risky search-and-rescue operation inside Iran. We are unstoppable as a military force,” Trump bragged from the White House on Wednesday night in his first major speech about the war. Six Air Force crew members died March 12 in the crash of their refueling tanker following a midair collision over Iraq. Seven service members died in the first days of the war after Iranian missile attacks on U.S. bases in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

So it may be hard to believe that ol’ Donny Trump won’t, yet again, wriggle his way out of another disastrous drop in his political standing. Trump’s Iran war has, even more than anything before, sent his approval rating in a nosedive. Trump could escalate and invade Iran with ground troops, which will make the energy crisis catastrophically worse. But it is even worse for Trump personally, as his second term has been plagued by one unpopular initiative after another. Meanwhile, the full impact of the Iran war on prices, particularly for gas, has not yet come close to being felt.

The blueprint released Friday — a largely symbolic reflection of the president’s priorities — would increase the government’s defense spending by more than 40% compared to last year. It would also provide hefty raises of between 5% and 7% for all military personnel to help with recruitment and retention. The budget proposals for other agencies also reflect the administration’s interest in bolstering the nation’s defense systems. The budget would cancel $15 billion of DOE funding from that bill and repurpose over $4.5 billion. And Trump would cut an additional $1.4 billion in funding from the Internal Revenue Service, which he has long accused of being “weaponized” against Americans.

Americans’ views of both the Democratic and Republican parties remain deeply negative, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS. And in an election year that may turn on which party voters see as the lesser of two evils, the Democrats hold an early advantage. In the 2022 election, when both parties were viewed negatively by just over half of all voters, “double-hater” voters broke in Republicans’ favor by a wide margin, according to CNN exit polls. Compared to the midterms in President Donald Trump’s first term, both the president and the Democrats have grown less popular. Schumer sees particularly low numbers, with a net minus-32 favorability rating among the public as a whole and a net minus-4 even among those aligned with the Democratic Party.
