However, if it raises employers’ contributions to national insurance, those same “working people” will be affected because they are likely to receive smaller pay rises (“Tories accuse Labour of plotting ‘betrayal’ on national insurance”, Oct 14). An employer will allocate a certain amount of money for pay awards. If the government then demands more for its tax, that money must come from somewhere. If this latest assault on businesses is indeed true, the government will be hurting the very people it claims it
