Sir, Matthew Parris says that “Our task in the West is to contain, with quiet steeliness, while nature takes its course” (“Of course we’ll have to do a deal with Putin”, comment, Jul 2). Did anyone tell President Zelensky that our intention all along was to observe from a safe distance, like watching a cat finishing off a badly mauled mouse, while his country was overcome by a violent aggressor? “Steely” sounds rather noble when actually “cowardly” and “self-interested” are a more accurate description of our involvement so far. It is plain to me that we are only concerned with “the next time” that Putin decides to attack.
