THE Department of Education (DepEd) said on Tuesday that public school students are not required to wear school uniforms when they participate in any of the distance learning approaches for the incoming school year. DepEd issued the clarification following a report that it was urging students to wear their uniforms or appropriate clothing during online classes to prevent incidents of bullying. “Even before the pandemic, it is not a strict requirement for public schools to wear uniforms to avoid incurring additional cost to the families of our learners,” DepEd said in a statement. There are 23,018,978 students enrolled in both private and public schools nationwide. Of the total, 21.2 million are enrolled in public schools while 1.5 million are registered in private schools.
