Ethiopia’s Council of Ministers Approves Law Reaccepting Former Terrorist Political Groups

borkenaToronto – The council of ministers on Friday discussed and approved legislation to accept political parties that had been operating “outside of peaceful and legal political activity.”It was discussed within the context of “Ethiopian election, political parties registration and election code of conduct” legislation. That piece of legislation was missing something, the Council of Ministers argued. “Whenever political parties, who remained outside of the framework of legal and peaceful political activity, demonstrate interest in peaceful and legal political activity there was no provision in the existing legislation to accept these entities as legal political parties,” reads the statement from the office of Prime Minister which was written in Amharic. There has been no precedent in the past six or so years whereby the parliament declined to approve proposals from the council of ministers. The Council of Ministers seems to think that the TPLF has demonstrated interest in “legal and peaceful” political activity.
