A Manikganj court has sentenced two men to rigorous life imprisonment for the rape of a woman in the Singair upazila of the district in 2003. The convicts – Manik Mia, 45, and Abul Hossain, 47– have also been fined Tk1 lakh each, in default of which they would be required to serve an additional six months in prison. Manikganj Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Hasina Jahan Rowshan announced the verdict on Thursday. She added that the convicts had also been sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk5,000, in default of which they would serve one additional month in jail. Among other suspects in the case, Kalu Mia died in 2006 during the trial and Abdul Khalek has been acquitted by the court.
