President Biden’s re-election campaign was plunged into crisis after a faltering performance in the first TV debate with Donald Trump caused panic among Democrats about his chances of winning back the White House. Biden, 81, showed his age from the start of the showdown in Atlanta, Georgia, as he delivered meandering and muddled answers in a hoarse voice, in contrast to Trump’s more assured and disciplined messages on immigration and the economy. A snap poll by CNN, the host broadcaster, made Trump the winner of the debate by a two-to-one margin after a series of fumbles by Biden, including during an answer on the economy when he completely lost his train of thought. Speaking to reporters after the debate, Biden admitted to being sick, saying

In 2023, solar panels provided 6% of the world’s electricity, and BloombergNEF expects another 585 gigawatts of new solar capacity to be installed throughout 2024.It looks like there’s little that could dull solar’s shine (though the full effect of ramped-up US tariffs on Chinese panels remain to be seen.) Italy’s Premier Giorgia Meloni said that solar panels were a “threat to food sovereignty,” and the government has issued an emergency decree banning farmers from leasing their land to solar developers. A 2022 analysis by climate and energy publisher Carbon Brief found that ground-mounted solar panels covered less than 0.1% of land in the UK, requiring an average of 6 acres per megawatt of capacity. Speaking to the Financial Times, one Italian farmer described solar panels as “a gift from the heavens.” About 25% of designated farmland in Italy is lying fallow thanks to extreme heat, drought and rising costs. Placing solar panels on brownfield sites, car parks and roofs should also be made much easier. But pitching solar power against food and biodiversity may do more harm than good to the agricultural sector and ignores a whole host of benefits to both the planet and people.

The New York Times continues its attacks on a rival with more details about Mr Lewis’s part in cleaning up the phone-hacking scandal in 2011, these stemming from a policeman who worked on the inquiry. “Confidential documents obtained by The New York Times and interviews with people involved in the criminal investigation show that, almost from the beginning, investigators with London’s Metropolitan Police were suspicious of the company’s intentions, and came to view Mr. Lewis as an impediment. “This year, the power-hungry Roche forced his old rival Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, to ban the celebration of traditional Holy Week services in his diocese. What will happen to Old Rite Catholics if the Vatican turns the thumbscrews yet again? That is certainly the model followed by Private Eye’s anonymous correspondents, and no one else has had as many stories followed up.

England have laboured through the group stage as negative noise around the squad grows but they are hardly alone in stumbling, with the likes of France, Italy, Belgium and even hosts Germany showing fallibility through unconvincing performances. Classy Austria and swashbuckling Georgia have perhaps been the two most surprisingly impressive sides, although a more familiar name, Spain, are the only team to reach the knockouts with a 100 per cent record intact.

Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer will discover the verdict of the voters in the hours after the polls close at 10pm on July 4, having spent six weeks trying to convince the electorate that they are best suited to leading the country. Since Sunak called a snap general election — surprising even MPs in his own party — the Conservative Party’s campaign has faced a number of setbacks, including criticism of the prime minister leaving D-Day commemorations early and the revelations that those in Sunak’s inner circle were under investigation for alleged betting on the general election date.
