The latest order from the State Bank of Pakistan requiring exchange companies to publish to the Foreign Exchange Companies’ Association their day-end closing buying and selling rates for six major currencies needs to strengthen open market transparency and governance in the foreign exchange market. The action is a component of the September-initiated FX market reforms, which aim to restrict unlawful dollar trade and outflow, lower volatility, and strengthen regulatory oversight of open market activities. The bank has already ordered the major banks to “establish their wholly owned exchange companies to cater to the legitimate foreign exchange needs of the general public to foster efficiency,” and it has given smaller exchange companies three months to become fully fledged forex firms. The government should take strict measures to control under-invoicing of imports in order to increase dollar inflows through remittances, even though the reforms are essential for the stability of the currency rate. The market cannot be completely healed by treating one symptom while ignoring others.

The most concerning type of stress arises from the disparity between the affluent and less privileged students. This ostentatious display fosters an environment of inequality, leading to an inferiority complex and a sense of deprivation among less privileged students. Compounding this issue, the teaching community often exhibits a preferential attitude towards affluent students, exacerbating the feelings of inequality. Shehbaz Sharif, the President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and former prime minister, has likened the Peshawar High Court's (PHC) decision to suspend the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) ruling on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) iconic bat symbol to an “attack” on the commission's authority. On Tuesday, the PHC had suspended the ECP decision to nullify the PTI's intra-party polls and revoke its popular 'cricket bat' symbol. Addressing party workers during a ceremony at a private hotel in Karachi, Shehbaz said that the ECP’s decision was based on facts and PHC’s decision was tantamount to challenging the commission's authority. Regarding the upcoming elections on February 8, he expressed full preparedness, stating, "The outcome is in Allah's hands. It is encouraging to observe that there are more female candidates submitting candidature papers for the next elections than there were in 2018 and 2013. This disparity demonstrates how political parties failed to seize the chance to advocate for more equitable representation. Furthermore, the ECP and political parties need to collaborate to remove obstacles that prevent women from participating in politics. This entails combating cultural biases, guaranteeing the security of female candidates, and giving aspiring female lawmakers the tools and instruction they require. It is the duty of political parties, civic society, and governmental organisations to create an atmosphere in which women’s political participation goes beyond token participation and becomes an essential feature of our democratic system.
