Soldiers in Gombe State recovered two ballot boxes from thugs who snatched them from the Government Science Secondary School in the Jekadafari area of the state. The thugs appeared with guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons when the counting for the House of Representatives election was underway, aiming to snatch ballot boxes, papers and other relevant materials. Out of the four boxes snatched, security personnel retrieved two. He added, “They made away with four boxes, but the security operatives retrieved two from them. It took the intervention of the military to retrieve just two boxes from the four carried by the hoodlums.”

The suspect was said to have been handed over to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Bauchi State Office. According to the ICPC, Ahmad confessed the funds, conveyed in a tinted black Hilux vehicle with registration number JMA 85 AZ, was being moved to Gombe for a politician. The agency disclosed that the suspect was in possession of N900,000 cash in new naira notes and N1.1 million in old naira notes. The funds, which were packed in a “Ghana Must Go” bag, comprise six bundles of one thousand naira new notes of N600,000; six bundles of five hundred naira new notes of N300,000, and old two hundred naira notes of N1.1 million.”Further investigations by the Commission are ongoing.

At the same time, older bank notes stopped being accepted, creating a shortage in a country where many use cash for daily transactions.

In a statement signed on Wednesday by its president, the association said that no Deposit Money Bank (DMB) or other institutions providing financial services in the country has received such a directive from the CBN. “Customers who wish to carry out transfers or use electronic banking services will have unhindered access to these services before, during, and after the elections. “ACAMB urges Nigerians not to panic and to also avoid uncontrolled spending as a result of the fake news about the alleged plan to shut down bank branches and all digital banking channels. “ACAMB calls on Nigerians to be peaceful and orderly during the elections and wishes the nation successful conduct of free, fair and credible elections,” he added.

The Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions, Abdul Rasheed Bawa, on Wednesday, raised an alarm over plans by politicians to buy votes in kind and not only in cash during the general elections. He said, “We have an intel that a lot of politicians have bought some items that they will use to buy votes in kind and not in cash. Bawa further revealed that public officials, corrupt businessmen and not only governors are hoarding old and new naira notes with the intent to buy votes during the presidential election scheduled to hold on Saturday. So, I don’t want to say governors are these but I will say that public servants, either retired or serving and some businessmen with questionable characters are on our radar. “The biggest hurdle is if Nigerians don’t buy into what we are doing but I believe once we are united, we would be able to take inadequacies out of our system,” he stated.

The Financial Secretary of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agents and Chief Executive Officer of Dart Logistics Limited, Mr Yinka Ladipo, has called on foreign airlines operating in Nigeria to make available lower airfares to Nigerians. In a telephone interview with our correspondent on Monday, he urged the Federal Government to make the foreign exchange to available foreign airlines to enable them to repatriate trapped funds and encourage them to lower their airfares. According to him, the inability of foreign airlines to repatriate their funds has seriously affected the travel agency business, resulting in a hike in airfares. “I think I would blame the foreign airlines and the FG for the issue of the hike in airfares. “These airlines made sure Nigerians do not have access to lower fares, not that they increased their fares.
