Sulaimon OlanrewajuThe Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said that the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company Plc (NSPMC) has enough capacity and materials to produce the required quantity of the new Naira notes, adding that at no time did its governor, Godwin Emefiele, say anything to the contrary during his presentation to the National Council of State. The apex bank, while assuring Nigerians that it would increase circulation of the new notes to all parts of the country, debunked the rumour that it planned to close down some money deposit banks in some regions of the country. The bank said in the press statement, “At no time did the CBN Governor disclose this during his presentation to the National Council of State at its meeting on Friday, February 10, 2023. We also wish to restate that the NSPMC has the capacity and enough materials to produce the required indent of the Naira. “The public is therefore advised to ignore such recordings as they do not represent the policy thrust of the CBN and are only the desperate attempts of persons bent on inciting the public against the bank.”

Let me also make it abundantly clear that my party and I are not against the Naira redesign policy. However, as all policies do, particularly when not thought through, they tend to become victims of their unintended consequences. The question must, therefore, be what could go wrong if we, that is the Central Bank, did this or that. Perhaps, what it is, is that the Central Bank sought glory but brought gory tales. The Nigerian banking system has remained largelyu rban-biased and has evolved very little to serve infrastructures in rural areas.

Yomi Ayeleso – Ado-EkitiThe Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) Professor Wahab Egbewole has lamented that many graduates from the nation’s universities have failed to meet up and compete favourably in the labour market. According to him, “The goal of education should be to generate compassionate and creative students who will contribute to the development and maintenance of a just society. “Some of our educational institutions have produced graduates who compare favourably with their peers in other parts of the world and are making waves, but it is also true that they have produced graduates who have not measured up to standard. “There are also cases of graduates who are so educationally vapid, to the extent that they are adjudged not to be trainable, and therefore, not employable.”Egbewole called for the reinvention of Nigeria’s school curriculum, as part of the solutions to rejuvenating standards in the nation’s education system. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says a cashless policy, when effectively operated in Nigeria, can help stem the surge of illicit election financing by making it possible to track funds. “So much money can be spent without it being tracked under the current election financing practices in the country.’’Osinbajo acknowledged the serious difficulty in controlling election financing because of cash transactions. “With cash transactions, it is still difficult to seriously control election financing.’’On electoral offences, the vice president said the Electoral Offences Commission Bill was at the National Assembly. He said he hoped that it would begin a new regime of dealing with electoral offences which would be helpful. As they say in legal parlance, the most recent outburst of Tinubu in Abeokuta, Ogun State, last Wednesday has provoked issues for determination. To be sure, the allegation of a conspiracy theory was already in the public domain, long before Tinubu made that allegation. They are hoarding naira notes, they are hoarding fuel, we will vote and we will win,” he told a jubilant but rowdy crowd of supporters. Forget the very jejune and I dare say, lacking-creative-acumen press release issued by the Directorate of Media & Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Council. You will recall that, in June, 2022, hours before the APC congress, Tinubu had made similar spark where he literally called Buhari out.

An armed group in Mali that signed a major peace deal in 2015 said this week it was pulling out of efforts to draft a new constitution. The new constitution is a key part of a peace and reconciliation process designed to return the country from military to civilian rule by March 2024. The decision to go further and boycott the work of rewriting the constitution came just hours after Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop accused the armed groups of “hampering” efforts to put the peace process in place. The CMA repeated its request for a meeting with international mediators to discuss the viability of the peace deal, which it had said in December was close to breaking down. Under international pressure, the current military government has agreed to allow a return to civilian rule in March 2024.
