Work on a new turning bay at the entrance to the Lowburn lakeside area is proceeding on schedule and is expected to be completed early next year, Land Information New Zealand (Linz) says. Lack of a turning bay had earlier looked to deflate the summer plans for Kiwi Water Park, an inflatable playground moored on Lake Dunstan, which uses the Lowburn car park for visitor vehicles.

The New Zealand GDP figures have surpassed expectations by going up 2 percent, but it may come with consequences. This economic growth was helped by a surge in service activity, international tourism and exports following the borders opening and Covid-19 restrictions easing up. Service industries, warehousing, and transport were among the leading forces in growth. Economists had predicted a 0.9 percent increase, and the 2 percent increase is far beyond what they predicted, but NZ Herald business editor Liam Dann warns that this growth may force a higher OCR hike come February. An advertisement for a “fully furnished” bedroom the size of a “broom cupboard” has been removed after being heavily mocked by potential renters on social media. “Fall asleep peacefully at any time, this is a real home!” the advertisement, which included additional images of larger rooms, said. The listing for the single room up for rent was removed after heavy backlash. Someone else alleged it was illegal to rent a room that small, citing a minimum width of 1.8 metres under the Housing Improvement Regulations and Healthy Homes Guarantee Act. While the images of the “broom cupboard” have since been removed, David, who identified himself as the person who created the listing, told Stuff.co.nz only the larger rooms with queen beds were up for rent, with the single rooms listed for kids to nap in during the day.

Yesterday’s announcement by Finance Minister Grant Robertson that the Government will axe half-price fares for public transport in an election year certainly seems odd. Axing a popular and effective policy On the surface, this announcement is madness – especially the decision to effectively double the price of public transport. The issue nicely dovetailed with Labour’s intention to transform public transport, helping combat the climate change crisis. The public transport initiative was extremely popular, with an overwhelming majority of the public wanting it extended, not axed. In fact, there’s a strong case for actually getting rid of fares entirely, making public transport free.
