A round the bays road race on the same day Victoria and Massey University students move into their central city accommodation. Victoria University Wellington anticipates around 700 students will be moving into its first year catered halls, with another 420 making the transition into independent living halls. Wellington City Council suggests anyone not taking part in either activity should avoid town to avoid potential gridlocks. “The Round the Bays largely effects the eastern suburbs and will be over by midday … the main [student] shifting usually happens in the afternoon,” spokesperson Richard MacLean said. Instead, along with other Nuku Ora staff, he will join the dozens of volunteers working to help the day run smoothly.

James Shaw in Parliament yesterday during the Ministerial Statements — Cyclone Gabrielle—Declaration of State of National Emergency. The Green Party also supports the declaration of a state of emergency in response to Cyclone Gabrielle. I do want to thank the Government and the Minister for the decisive and comprehensive course of action that they are taking in response to this crisis. I’ve been recalling, actually, a quote from a different time about a different crisis: “The era of procrastination, of half measures, of soothing and baffling expedience of delays, is coming to its close. The severity of it, of course, made worse by the fact that our global temperatures have already increased by 1.1 degrees.

The cause is relatively obvious: many houses and buildings are connected to the power grid by overground power lines. Costs and benefitsPerhaps the main argument against burying power lines is the cost. If the cost to households and businesses from a loss of power is also considered, the economics of burying power lines become much more palatable. In shaky California, one utility company plans to spend US$10 billion burying power lines to prevent fires. At this point, it’s not clear how extensively cyclone Gabrielle damaged the power lines, but it will likely take days or weeks, not hours, to restore power to everyone.

"Three years of trying to save the other person's pain has caused friendships to shrivel up. At this point in a discussion about resuscitating post-COVID friendships, I'm supposed to tell you to "reach out." And did my friends open up to me about their own break-ups, money worries and black dog days of the pandemic? So we find ourselves with a rather ironic friend famine. Three years of trying to save the other person's pain has caused friendships to shrivel up like carrots at the back of the fridge.
