In celebration of the major cultural moment that is Te Matatini Kapa Haka Festival, a four-day event held at Eden Park, Tāmaki Makaurau, TVNZ has shared its broadcast feed with NZ’s biggest news sites, Stuff and The NZ Herald. “We wanted to activate Te Matatini in a way that was unique to both the ambition of TVNZ, and the cultural significance of the event,” says dentsu Media Business Director Sebastian Van Dyk. In essence this meant connecting TVNZ’s live broadcast feed to dentsu Media’s D4 platform, which in turn allowed them to pass the live feed into display banners across NZ Herald and Stuff, simultaneously. This is the first time a live video feed has powered the homepages across two of New Zealand’s biggest websites. Te Matatini festival will be live streamed on TVNZ+ (and on air across TVNZ 2).

England’s second Test in New Zealand will be played to a familiar soundtrack after the home side sportingly stepped in to have the Barmy Army’s trumpet repaired. But it looked as if Finch would fall silent at Basin Reserve this week after an incident during the first Test at Mount Maunganui. The instrument was taken, dropped and damaged by a local fan, leaving it bent out of shape and out of tune. The news soon reached New Zealand Cricket, who arranged to have it fixed by Wellington-based expert Brad Teal and even picked up the bill. While the songs and support are usually directed at getting behind the visiting team, our players and everyone at the event thoroughly enjoys the atmosphere they help create."

The Regional Public Transport Plan (RPTP) is an important statutory document that lays out how public transport will develop and operate in the region. Some of this has obviously been outside of AT’s control, thanks to the pandemic and more recently issues like driver shortages and rail network meltdowns. The improvements the CATR fund is meant to provide, which are now in jeopardy, cover routes across most of the PT network. There will be some early public engagement in March, followed by full public consultation in June, with the final plan to be approved and released in September. I hope that by the time it gets to public consultation that AT is a bit more aspirational for how PT could develop.

ANZ NZ said it is also working with a number of partner organisations to further support the initial response and recovery effort. The match will feature BLACKCAPS vs Sri Lanka and will be held on March 25 at Eden Park. In addition to the $1m donation pledged by ANZ at the match, the bank is also encouraging the public to donate further on the day. Watson said ongoing support would be required in the form of donations, funding, and finance initiatives to deal with the impacts of the cyclone. “One of the big tasks will be the need to be innovative in how the nation funds the recovery and rebuild.”

Here's our summary of key economic events overnight that affect New Zealand, with news that high bond yields are rattling international equity markets. 'Good' economic news is currently 'bad' for market prices because it brings expectations the monetary authorities will keep raising interest rates. If Brazil suddenly stopped exporting beef, that would throw the international market into turmoil - and be inflationary everywhere else. We should note again that the international price of natural gas just keeps on falling, now back to levels we last saw in 2020 and first saw in 1990. The UST 10yr yield starts today at 3.90% and down -4 bps from yesterday and off its recent highs.
