Over the weekend, Labour’s leader, Chris Hipkins, opted for Aotearoa-New Zealand 2040 – the bi-centenary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. One of the most memorable of these was Harry McClintock’s 1928 hit, “The Big Rock Candy Mountain”. Ahead of the Three Rs, on Hipkins’ twenty-first century Big Rock Candy Mountain, children will learn “problem solving, creativity, teamwork, adaptability and resilience”. At the upper levels of the Labour Party hierarchy there would appear to be an unshakeable belief that the way forward for New Zealand is both well-understood and well-tested. At the very least, a Jackson tilt at the Labour leadership would be of huge assistance in bringing the party down off the Big Rock Candy Mountain.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon compared the Labour opposition to arsonists in a fire-heavy speech to supporters in Palmerston North this morning. Luxon and his speechwriters appeared to have firefighting on their mind when drafting the speech; later on, Luxon repeated the metaphor, but this time with the roles reversed. Luxon rehearsed some of his achievements “to cut red tape” and moves such as abolishing Labour’s prisoner reduction target. Taking questions after her own speech, Willis confirmed that she “will be increasing funding for disability services significantly” in the Budget. “I do know that some of them will find jobs in the public service... we are creating frontline roles,” Willis said.

Photo: 123rf.comWhen recovering from burnout it helps to prioritise doing whatever restores your spirit, says clinical fatigue specialist and "really skilful worrier" Vincent Deary. Many of us are driven by productivity and do not take our own need for rest and recovery seriously, he says. We don't really know how to rest and recover. Working at a fatigue clinic, Deary helped exhausted people challenge their personal beliefs about rest and recovery. "They would believe rest is a luxury, rest needs to be earned, rest is for weak people, strong stoic people don't need to rest to recover."

Nicola Willis says she isn’t borrowing for tax cuts and has staked her job on delivering meaningful tax cuts alongside a cut in public spending to afford the $2.9billion Landlord tax break. Her tax cuts are about $15Billion. Their advice is an inheritance tax, a Capital Gains Tax – OR raise GST. A CGT and inheritance tax would damage the real estate pimps who own them, where as a rise in GST would hurt those that National voters despise the most – the poor. Treasury have advised it and Nicola has suggested more revenue sources but has been coy what those will be.

The case is due to be heard in court on Tuesday, when a judge will decide whether to press ahead with any of the indictments. Yet even if Scheffler is only hit with a traffic misdemeanour – that would likely amount to a fine – he will contest it. “They [the charges] will either be dropped or we will go to trial because Scottie didn’t do anything wrong,” Steve Romines, Scheffler’s attorney, told Golf Channel. “There had been a traffic fatality down the road and so there were different traffic directions going on and traffic control officers were advising different things,” he said. “Scottie was advised by one officer to go around the traffic and turn left into the facility.
