Toulon have won the race to sign talented All Blacks prospect Leicester Fainga’anuku, ahead of the 2023/24 Top 14 season. The winger will see out his Super Rugby commitments with the Crusaders, and join up with Toulon after the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Fainga’anuku has been named in Ian Foster’s squad for the upcoming tournament in France, and is eyeing up a fifth Super Rugby crown with the Christchurch side. Four Super Rugby championships, one more to come, fingers crossed. However, his talents are not limited to being a powerhouse winger, as the Crusaders star has previously played centre for his club.

Auckland Airport looks set to progressively lift airline charges over the next five years, after a year-long price freeze. But Air NZ chief executive Greg Foran told RNZ's Checkpoint an increase in charges from Auckland Airport would affect ticket prices. Auckland Airport said airline domestic jet charges would increase 130 percent, reaching $15.45 per passenger by 2027. Earlier today Auckland Airport said airlines had benefited from "very low domestic charges" that reflected the age and condition of the domestic terminal. "We need to do the same to ensure travellers have a great experience when they travel through Auckland Airport."

This time Labour Cabinet Minister Michael Wood has been caught out for not complying with the Cabinet and Parliamentary rules in properly disclosing his ownership of shares in Auckland International Airport. To make matters worse, it appears as though Wood has also misled the Cabinet Office on the issue of divesting his shares. Likewise, in terms of the planned light rail to Auckland Airport, Wood has been driving the case to keep this $14.6 billion project going in the face of strong opposition. Critics can rightly argue that Wood’s actions were advantageous to Auckland Airport, because it meant that their monopoly in Auckland was protected. Arguably this was also the fault of the Cabinet Office, which apparently didn’t warn the PM’s Office.

Embattled Education Minister Jan Tinetti says she deeply regrets not fronting up about misleading Parliament earlier - a matter that has landed her before the privileges committee today. When she discovered this was incorrect, Tinetti did not immediately correct the record but waited 14 sitting days to do so. “It is for the Privileges Committee to determine whether the delay in correcting an inaccurate statement in this instance amounts to contempt. The question, therefore, stands referred to the Privileges Committee,” Rurawhe said. In 2008, Winston Peters was referred to the Privileges Committee over whether he should have declared a $100,000 donation from businessman Owen Glenn in 2005 towards his legal costs.

Political scandals often start as comedies before morphing into tragedies, and so Michael Wood may lose his beloved transport portfolio because he failed to sell a handful of shares. Still, Auckland Airport has prospered as a private company, delivering its shareholders a more than 630% return on investment over the past 20+ years. Prime Minister Chris Hipkins revealed on Wednesday that Wood was asked 12 times to sell the shares since November 2020. Companies themselves keep track of who owns what shares, and Auckland Airport’s share register is maintained by Link Market Services. Redemption possiblePrime Minister Chris Hipkins has left the door open for Michael Wood to be restored to the role of Transport Minister once he had sold the shares and corrected his disclosures.

The building industry is probably already in the early stages of a downturn, according to the latest figures from Statistics NZ. Building consent figures have been suggesting a pending downturn in construction activity for several months, but that is a forward looking indicator of future activity levels. However Statistics NZ's latest survey of building activity suggests the downturn could already be starting to bite into current work levels. Building work commencements usually decline between the fourth quarter of one year and the first quarter of the next, but the latest decline of 4.8% was significantly greater than previous years. In the first quarter of last year the value of building work commenced was down 3.3% from the previous quarter, and in the first quarter of 2021 the value of building work was down just 2.0% from the previous quarter.
