The paper's publisher NZME had just announced plans to close almost all its free local papers in the North Island, including the Taupō & Tūrangi Herald, citing mounting costs and slumping ad revenue. The New Herald Zealand Herald Media Insider column said the papers could close as soon as Christmas, with the loss of 30 jobs. NZME's rival Stuff closed its community paper, Taupō Times, in June. "An arid outlook for local media," concluded former New Zealand Herald editor Gavin Ellis, raising the prospect of 'news deserts' overseas appearing here. LGNZ president Sam Broughton said in a statement the entire country could be covered this way to help local media report local issues, especially with the prospect of local elections next year in some places with no local journalists.

The moment Nadal Acherkouk was gunned down on a petrol station forecourt in Surry Hills has been captured on CCTV footage showing two men dressed from head to toe in makeshift black outfits, firing pistols and chasing their critically wounded victim around petrol bowsers. Cleveland Street was buzzing with Friday night diners when the two masked men were seen running towards a blue car containing Acherkouk, which was parked at the BP service station, just before 7.45pm. One of the men, wearing a black poncho and gloves, raises his pistol and fires three rapid shots at point-blank range into the car through the driver’s side window, footage shows. The other gunman is partially obscured but also had a pistol raised and aimed at the car. Acherkouk, though apparently struck by at least one bullet in the torso, is seen scrambling from the driver’s seat to the front passenger seat of the vehicle and then sprinting away from the car.

I'm talking of course about the possible size of cuts to the Official Cash Rate (OCR). However, the pricing has moderated more recently and at time of writing the markets are very much pricing in a 50 point cut. And interestingly, the markets' previous collective conviction that another 50 point cut will be forthcoming in the February review has softened somewhat, though a 50 point move is still heavily favoured. Well, the easiest option for the RBNZ appears to be a 50 point cut on the coming Wednesday. With the 2% target inflation rate well within reach, we believe the RBNZ needs to get the cash rate below 4% ASAP.
