Video / SailGP / Supplied / NZHeraldAir New Zealand says its Starlink internet on planes will redefine domestic travel. Air New Zealand is working with the world’s biggest satellite internet service provider, Starlink, to introduce free internet onboard domestic aircraft. After a successful trial of four to six months, Air New Zealand will roll out Starlink internet on other aircraft in its domestic fleet in 2025. Starlink satellites orbit much closer to Earth at about 550km, and cover the entire globe. Hawaiian Airlines, airBaltic and Qatar Airways are among a growing number of carriers that have installed or committed to Starlink internet.

Emerging Hurricanes loose forward Peter Lakai aims to hit the ground running when pre-season training resumes in January. Lakai had welcome news soon after the Hurricanes started their pre-season at the end of November when he had the cast removed after he suffered a scaphoid injury. Lakai came into the Hurricanes in 2023 after significantly contributing to Wellington's 2022 Bunnings NPC and Ranfurly Shield success. He's the best player in the world but he's a better man off it [the field] as well. Lakai has also enjoyed the benefits of the Hurricanes' training facility in Trentham, which shares the New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport premises.

Julian Platt praised the police response to the massacre at Al Noor Mosque but said the attack on Linwood Islamic Centre could have been disrupted. Police deployment to Al Noor Mosque was quick and actions taken were appropriate, Platt told the Coroners Court. The call gave police access to information about the Linwood attack as early as 1.45pm, he said. A senior police tactical expert last week told the inquest it would be "idealistic" to think police could have stopped the Linwood attack. "Based on this assessment, it appears an opportunity to pre-empt or disrupt the Linwood attack was a possibility, although the timings appear tight."
