TRIPOLI (Reuters) - At least 57 bodies have been washed ashore after two migrant boats sank in the Mediterranean off different towns in western Libya, a coast guard officer and an aid worker said on Tuesday. There was an argument as the boat was sinking but the man in charge refused to stop, he said. Eleven bodies, including that of a child, were recovered off Qarabulli in eastern Tripoli, said coast guard officer Fathi al-Zayani. The aid worker said more bodies were expected to be washed up in coming days. Italy has rescued 47 boats carrying around 1,600 migrants in the central Mediterranean sea in the last two days and brought them ashore to the island of Lampedusa.

RIYADH: Saudi Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that 199 more people have been safely evacuated from Sudan and have arrived in Jeddah, after the North African country’s warring factions agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire. Statistics show that a total of 356 people have been evacuated from Sudan, including 101 Saudi nationals and 255 individuals from 26 other countries. The country is committed to assisting foreign nationals in returning to their home countries and is making every effort to facilitate their departure. Sudan’s warring factions agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire starting on Tuesday, while Western, Arab and Asian nations raced to extract their citizens from the country. The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) said the US and Saudi Arabia mediated the truce.

Historically, Libyan women have been placed under severe social and cultural constraints that rendered them difficult to reach. So I needed a method that would provide a platform whereby the women can respond to the survey without prying eyes. I have a large family in Libya which straddles two different tribes, as well as family friends, so I was confident that wasta was the best approach to take. Much of the feedback I received from family members was worrying. Social media, which doesn’t mandate use of real names or photographs, was able to offer this in a way that extended family and friends, naturally, never could.

The Libyan authorities evacuated in early Monday morning 105 Libyan nationals from Sudan as fierce fighting continues in the neighboring country. In a statement, the Libyan Foreign Ministry said that the nationals were evacuated via sea to Saudi Arabia in coordination with the Saudi authorities. The group included Libyan diplomatic staff and their families, Libyan students, and employees of Libyan institutions operating in Sudan, the ministry said. The Libyan authorities will then commission a flight to bring the group home “in the near future”, according to the ministry’s statement. According to Sudan’s health ministry, the deadly clashes have left at least 420 people killed and more than 3,700 injured, as of 23 April.
