When Suna East MP Junet Mohamed hosted President William Ruto in Suna East. [Junet Mohamed, X]Minority leader in the National Assembly, Junet Mohamed, has backed President William Ruto’s proposal to sell government shares in Safaricom and the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC), arguing that the move is necessary to raise more than Sh300 billion to finance key development projects. The Suna East MP dismissed criticism of the proposal, citing past privatisations such as KCB, Telkom, and KenGen, and accused opponents of ignoring history. “Those opposing the sale of Safaricom and KPC should wait until they get a chance to run the government and make their own decisions,” he said. Senator Cheruiyot said the sale of shares in Safaricom and KPC would unlock funds for long-stalled infrastructure projects.

Conflicting High Court orders issued in Nairobi and Kerugoya over the clearance of 500,000 tonnes of duty-free rice at the Port of Mombasa have thrown the import process into confusion. On one hand, Nairobi High Court Judge Bahati Mwamuye ordered the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to immediately release the rice into the country. On the other hand, the High Court in Kerugoya froze the clearance of the same consignment until next week. Justice Muriithi was not the first judge to issue restraining orders over the rice imports. He argued that the duty-free rice imports were intended to cushion Kenyans against drought and food shortages, particularly in ASAL regions.

Negotiators from Russia, Ukraine and the US are meeting in Abu Dhabi for their first trilateral talks since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the United Arab Emirates Foreign Ministry says. Ukraine is engaging with the process because it wants peace more than anyone, but also because it needs to keep the US onside. It learned that lesson the hard way last year, when Donald Trump briefly suspended intelligence sharing and military aid. Russia insists that Ukraine should hand over the big slice of the eastern Donbas region, which it has failed to win on the battlefield. There's also the giant new doubt about how good a guarantee from Donald Trump really is: the US president's fixation on "acquiring" Greenland has severely undermined Nato.

A few people over the internet that I know personally are now trying to find the answers to the Bulgarian mystic Baba Vanga prediction for 2026 that is going viral on social media. People are trying to decode the prediction to know whether they should invest more in gold or sell off. Some other predictions go a step further, suggesting gold prices could rise by 25 to 40% during 2026. Analysts continue to stress that gold prices are influenced by multiple factors, including global interest rates, inflation trends, geopolitical tensions, and central bank policies.

TIME UP Directors must call ‘cut’ sooner or filmgoers will drift off, warns leading UK cinema expertDIRECTORS should make shorter films if they want their work screened in cinemas, according to the head of one of the UK’s leading cinema and distribution companies. As Oscar season kicks off, we speak to top Scots director Ryan Hendrick about what happens when film-makers refuse to cut their work. THE last two films shot by director Ryan Hendrick came in around the 1h 40m mark — which he insists are a direct push-back against long “indulgent” flicks. Glasgow-born Ryan’s movie Mercy Falls, starring Outlander and Karen Pirie actress Lauren Lyle, was released in 2023 with a modest budget of £250,000. Ryan, 41, said: “Three-hour-plus films just feel like an overindulgence and I think audiences are bored of them.

Uganda’s opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has alleged that armed security personnel broke into his home on Friday night and assaulted members of his family, amid mounting scrutiny over the country’s post-election environment. Wine, who has remained out of public view since a military operation at his residence on January 16, stated that masked and armed individuals entered his home on January 23 and attacked relatives who were present. “A group of masked, armed soldiers has just broken into our house and beat up my family members. He also referenced reports alleging that about 2,000 opposition members, including polling agents and senior NUP officials, are unaccounted for, while more than two dozen deaths have been reported, citing statements attributed to Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba. “We regret pre- and post-electoral violence and threats, particularly against opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), and call on all parties to exercise restraint and on the authorities to ensure the safety of all political actors,” the EU said.

/NDINDI NYORO/FBKiharu Member of Parliament, Ndindi Nyoro, has proposed the creation of a national education kitty to fund free day secondary education nationwide, including meals. The remaining Sh10 billion would be injected by the national government through budget adjustments within the Ministry of Education. County governments would collectively add another Sh10 billion, while the national government would provide the final Sh10 billion. He said the push for free secondary education is long overdue and should begin immediately, calling for urgency in the implementation of the initiative. “My call is to have free basic education from term two of 2026,” Nyoro said, adding that a national education kitty would end the practice of politicians using education support as a campaign tool during election periods.
