Kenya’s National Treasury is seeking to reduce the dominance of banks in government securities investments by opening up the market to more non-bank financial institutions. “The National Treasury continues to spearhead key reforms to deepen the domestic debt market and diversify the investor base,” it says. “The domestic debt market continues to diversify the investor base in government securities by implementing a market engagement programme, including the monthly Bond Market Forum with the domestic institutional investors and stakeholders,” Treasury says. NCBA group, Absa Bank Kenya and Standard Chartered Bank Kenya saw their interest income on government securities decline by Ksh250 million ($1.93 million), Ksh410 million ($3.17 million) and Ksh550 million ($4.26 million) respectively. In July this year, global rating agency Moody’s downgraded the credit rating of KCB Bank Kenya, Co-operative Bank Kenya and Equity Bank Kenya, largely due to their increased sovereign exposure in the form of securities issued by a government with a weakened credit profile.

''There are cohorts of Kenyans and other nationalities who have been forcibly moved from their areas of residence with some being held at homes,’’ the source revealed. Researchers from Penn State, Pennsylvania, have said they have developed an electronic tongue that can identify the differences between the two fizzy drinks. They have also created an algorithm within the tongue that mimics the thoughts of a human brain, helping it to become familiar with food tasting. Scientists found that their creation could detect watered-down milk, different types of sodas, coffees and multiple fruit juices with more than 80 per cent accuracy. Peterson Njomo Muchira, in an affidavit, said Gachagua used him to acquire the Olive Garden Hotel. He said he has since engaged Jahenda to run the hotel as agreed with the Deputy President. Gachagua had said he benefited from the sale of the hotel, having received Sh20 million as a beneficiary of his brother’s estate. In his defence, Gachagua denied acquiring the hotel, saying it was sold to a third party in line with his late brother’s will.
