“But as long as I am prime minister, Poland will not be a vassal in this relationship,” Tusk added. “Allied relations cannot consist of someone constantly saying ‘yes’ to everything.”While its central European neighbours are warmer or cooler towards the Trump administration, Poland is a country divided. “It is clear what the aggressive, imperial Russia’s attitude toward Poland is,” he said in a television interview. Pressed, he declined to say whether he favoured Poland joining a common European initiative or buying its own system – from the US or elsewhere. Poland’s struggle to be a co-operative Trump ally is clear, too, from an ongoing controversy over Poland’s parliamentary speaker Wlodzimierz Czarzasty.

The top of the table Division 2 clash is the first time in seven years that the Cork footballers will play a home League game at Páirc Uí Rinn. The other factor in the decision to play a league game at Páirc Uí Rinn this spring is the possibility of the Cork footballers returning to the venue come championship. In the event that Cork are involved in Round 3, and drawn to play at home, the game will be staged at Páirc Uí Rinn owing to Páirc Uí Chaoimh’s unavailability. A Bruce Springsteen concert saw Cork host - and overcome - Donegal at Páirc Uí Rinn during the 2024 All-Ireland series. Premium Level and South Stand ticket holders have already received their tickets for Sunday's game in Páirc Uí Rinn.

Planning permission for almost 200 new homes on the outskirts of Cork City as part of a mixed-use residential and retail development has been firmly rejected for a number of reasons, including its adverse impact on retail business in Blarney and Ballincollig. An Coimisiún Pleanála has turned down a planning application by Cloghroe Development Limited for a strategic housing development of 198 residential units at Coolflugh, Cloghroe, Tower, Co Cork. An Coimisiún Pleanála listed five separate grounds for refusing planning permission for the project. The commission said the plans also contravened the retail planning guidelines for planning authorities, which are used to justify medium- to large-scale retail development in out-of-centre locations. The board had refused planning permission for the retail element of the plans but had granted planning permission for the remainder of the project.

It is, of course, the Winter Olympics where, to all intents and purposes, sane and rational people in all other aspects of life, leap and twist and jump and pivot over snow or ice in the most bizarre and utterly hypnotic ways. The Winter Olympics doesn’t quite have the reach or audience of its summer counterpart but it is just as compelling and far, far more brilliantly bonkers. Ireland has a team but truth be told winter races or icy competitions of any ilk have never been our forte. I was living in Japan when the Winter Olympics took place in Nagano. Watching the Olympics, it’s nice to think of what might have been.

Social media giants Meta and WhatsApp have been granted permission by the High Court to challenge the calculation of a €12m State levy to be imposed by media watchdog Coimisiún na Meán for their supervision costs. At the High Court, lawyers for Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd and WhatsApp Ireland Ltd successfully applied to Ms Justice Mary Rose Gearty for permission to challenge what they claim is a transparency issue over the calculation behind the levy. In court papers, Meta says the company is the provider of Facebook and Instagram services to users in Ireland. Meta and WhatsApp are seeking an order from the High Court to quash a statutory instrument under the Broadcasting 2009 Act under which the multi-million euro levy was issued. The companies claim that they were submitted "invoices" instead of the "appropriate notices", under the commission's declarations, for the purposes of compliance with a 2025 Levy Order.
