The head of HSE South-West says he has "empathy” for the situation of a Cork mother who dropped her intellectually disabled child to an emergency department, but described her actions as “not sensible”. She said she had taken the desperate action on foot of her exasperation at being unable to access a disabled residence for her child. “I have tremendous empathy for parents, and this particular parent, just to say it is not a sensible thing for parents to drop their children off,” he said. The Department of Housing is to launch a website mapping registered derelict properties across local authority areas, local government minister John Cummins has said. He said some councils are performing “better than others” in registering derelict properties on sites on their individual registers. The proposal comes as the Government is due to introduce a derelict property tax in the years ahead. A meeting was held recently on the matter between Mr Cummins, housing minister James Browne, and finance minister Simon Harris. If people that own these properties aren’t using those schemes, they are going to be hit with a significant derelict property tax,” said Mr Cummins.

Centrica is investing €380m in two new Irish power plantsBord Gáis Energy owner Centrica says it has learned “valuable lessons” in the development of two 100MW power plants it’s building in Ireland at a cost of more than €380m. Capacity contracts guarantee that energy generators receive a minimum amount of money for making power generating capacity available. In Ireland, Bord Gáis Energy generated revenue of £1.02bn (€1.16bn) last year, unchanged over 2024. Those revenues and earnings are generated from across the Bord Gáis Energy operational platform in Ireland,“Our 2025 results reflect disciplined operational performance alongside accelerated delivery of our infrastructure programme and net-zero growth strategy,” said Dave Kirwan, Bord Gáis Energy chairman and managing director of Centrica Power.
