The Gunners suffered a serious blow to their Premier League title quest when they drew with bottom side Wolves on Wednesday night. ‌Arsenal went nine points clear in the Premier League when they beat Sunderland 3-0 on February 7, but are now seeing questions raised about their credentials. They have not won the Premier League title in 22 years and ex-Spurs midfielder Van der Vaart is not convinced they have what it takes this time around, following three straight second-place finishes. ‌“For me, Arsenal always feels like a youth team – when everything goes well it is fantastic, but when the pressure is too high, they lose their heads," Van der Vaart told Sky Bet. “I don’t think Arsenal are strong enough to compete on all fronts and challenge for the treble or quadruple," Van der Vaart added.

The owners of No 21A Dunlocha Cottages have been in situ since 2009. Now, another ‘A’ comes along, in the guise of the four-bedroomed, c 1,590 sq ft No 21A which is guided at €490,000 by Midleton-based Adrianna Hegarty and Niamh Hegarty. They say the discretely-sited four-bed has been “meticulously maintained to an exceptional standard, offering bright, contemporary living within one of Cork city’s most desirable suburban settings”. Right now, all of No 21A’s accommodation is on the one level, but the owners deliberately made the hall large enough to take a staircase at some future time if desired. No 21A’s vendors have been lucky enough to be able to live a few months of the year in the sun, and are moving east from the city.

Estimates suggest that there are about 12 million domestic cats worldwide and that they kill between100 million and 250 million animals, mostly birds, annually. The team also compared domestic cat meows with those of five wild species; African wildcat, European wildcat, jungle cat, cheetah and cougar. ‘Domestic cat meows’, the authors say, ‘showed greater acoustic dispersion than those of wild cats, reflecting increased vocal plasticity through domestication’. Since then, the researchersargue, meowing has developed into a valuable tool which domestic cats use to manipulate not only other cats but also their keepers. Meows encode less individual information than purrs and show less greater variability in domestic than in wild cats.

Finding frogspawn always stirs a little excitement. Lake edges, ponds, bog pools or wet ditches are home to spawning frogs through February and March. Despite the intrigue many of us have with frogs and frogspawn, there is still an awful lot we don’t know about them. They morph from an aquatic female tadpole to a terrestrial male frog. Perhaps a saving grace for frogs is that a lot of us still harbour a little of our childhood fondness for frogspawn, tadpoles and froglets.

By now changes in nature and renewed wildlife activity should be seen and heard, loud and clear. Of course, nature doesn’t always oblige, especially with climate change having a huge bearing on the actions, and travel patterns of birds, and the blooming of flowers, for instance. In Ireland, timing of these happenings is important as it gives us clear signals of climate change: birdsong was heard right through the winter just passed, and numerous plants were growing. The Farmer’s Wildlife Calendar is organised by the National Biodiversity Data Centre, with the support of the Department of Agriculture. Farmers are asked to submit records of first sightings and locations under nine headings to show how nature is being impacted by climate change and recent weather.

It has become a blot on the landscape and one would assume that World Rugby are anxious to fix it, including the risible put-in. Instead, World Rugby have the scrum on death row. Recently, the chair of World Rugby, Australia’s Brett Robinson, insisted that union is not moving towards league. It is one of the sport’s great characteristics, and those are what makes rugby union unique. We lose that uniqueness at our peril – sure there would be some sort of game but it would not be rugby union.
