Ireland referred to European court over turf cuttingIreland has been referred to the Court of Justice of the European Union for failing to protect sites designated for raised bog and blanket bog habitats from turf cutting. The move could ultimately result in greater restrictions on turf cutting on bogs in the region. It said: “These sites in Ireland continue to be degraded through drainage and turf cutting activities, and insufficient action is being taken to restore the sites.”The issue has been ongoing since 2011. Ireland hosts some of the most unique active raised bog sites in the EU as well as large areas of still active blanket bog. Ireland must redouble its efforts to move turf cutting machines away from these sites before the damage done makes restoration impossible.”

The European Union has moved a step closer to enacting the most comprehensive guardrails on the fast-developing world of artificial intelligence (AI). Members of the European Parliament on Wednesday endorsed a provisional agreement on AI rules, the world’s first legislation on a technology used in banking, internet-connected devices, smart homes and cars. It would also place the first restrictions on generative AI tools, which captured the world’s attention last year with the popularity of ChatGPT. As talks reached the final stretch last year, the French and German governments pushed back against some of the strictest ideas for regulating generative AI, arguing that the rules will hurt European start-ups such as France’s Mistral AI and Germany’s Aleph Alpha. In practice, the office will be the key enforcer, with the ability to request information from companies developing generative AI and possibly ban a system from operating in the bloc.

Bonus points ‘promote positive rugby’ – Six Nations boss says format set to stayBy Duncan Bech, PA England Rugby CorrespondentSix Nations chief executive Tom Harrison insists bonus points are unlikely to be abandoned if it transpires that Ireland win this year’s tournament despite claiming fewer victories than England. Ireland are in the driving seat and could retain their title even if they lose or draw against Scotland and England topple France, because they have already accumulated four bonus points. It would be the first time since bonus points were introduced in 2017 that the team finishing top had collected fewer victories than the side in second, but Harrison has indicated the format is here to stay. When asked about whether a rethink would be needed if the Six Nations was won in that way, Harrison replied: “Yes, if we think bonus points are a problem. “But remember why bonus points are there – bonus points are there to promote positive rugby.
