Buses make their way along Clontarf Road, Dublin, during flooding on February 5. In both years, house and businesses along the Clontarf Road were flooded. The following year agreement was reached, in principle, on a dual wall defence, involving the existing sea wall and a new wall near the roadside, replacing the “little waterfall” wall. “We’ve been saying, right from the beginning, we absolutely want the flood defences, but we don’t want to lose the promenade. Between 2011 and 2017, the Department of Housing knowingly over-counted new housing completions by 58 per cent. If electricity connections overestimate house completions by forward-counting, the BCMS may underestimate them through delays in recording completion certificates. Almost all new housing in Dublin city since 2022 has been apartments, nearly all for the State or investment companies. In Dublin city, the CSO figures show, a paltry 58 new houses and 150 new apartments were sold to ordinary buyers last year, from an output of 4,521 . Councillor Deirdre Heney, chair of Dublin City Council’s housing committee, wondered – apparently with the best of intentions – if the council could encourage people away from the city.

Like almost a billion people, I’ve moved to the 5.2 model of ChatGPT – even cleverer still. “Dear ChatGPT, would you please construct me a model investment portfolio comprising any asset class, fund, product or security. It said a 6.5 per cent return was “ambitious but achievable”, requiring a “meaningful” equity exposure. Meanwhile, in the 10th of my portfolio in private equity or illiquid investments, it reckoned listed private equity trusts were the way to go, likewise secondary funds as well as “diversified private equity trusts”. This should give me a 3 to 5 per cent return while being a “shock absorber, liquidity reserve and rebalancing tool”.

When it comes to zoning land for building, 'the relationship between specialist advisers and councils is always a bit tricky' says one academic. Long after the existing homes were built, however, the area was identified in a national flood mapping project, the Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) programme, as being at significant risk from the nearby Terryland river. Under the national planning guidelines and the Planning Act that makes them binding, “inappropriate development” in areas at risk of flooding must be avoided. The regulator intervened to try to stop 288 sites at flood risk being zoned for housing or other vulnerable developments in the past six years. “Authorities should base flood risk assessments on robust, site-specific evidence, such as historical actual flood data, where available and reliable, rather than relying heavily on predictive flood risk models,” the company wrote.

Both have been through the ringer after Hughes Brown was detained by immigration and customs officials at Chicago airport when returning home from Ireland last July. “She didn’t want to.”Donna Hughes Brown and her husband Jim Brown visit their horses at a field behind their home in Missouri. While in detention, Hughes Brown took solace in a depth of fortitude that is, clearly, remarkable. English became the default language and Hughes Brown spent that week, bewildering and frightening as the situation was, teaching basic phrases through sketches and hand signals. It drives me nuts that they have been allowed to do this to people.”“If I am the worst of the worst then America has a bigger problem than it thinks it does,” Hughes Brown adds.

After being boxed into a “take it or leave it” offer for the guts of 40 years ago, Stardust survivors say they now face into a redress scheme based on that same “flawed” principle. This week, a redress scheme for survivors of the tragedy, where 48 young people lost their lives following a fire at a north Dublin nightclub in 1981, formally opened. Just a few days before the 45th anniversary of the disaster, minister for justice Jim O’Callaghan announced the redress scheme for survivors of the Stardust fire in a move that blindsided these very survivors. If you signed up to this Government scheme to offer redress, then you had to give up your court case. "Phase Two (Ex-Gratia Stardust Recognition Payment Scheme) for survivors is open for applications since Monday, February 16.. Full details, including terms and conditions, frequently asked questions and contact details, are available at www.stardustrecognitionpayment.ie.
