Following the game, the then 18-year-old said: “We’ve beaten Man City, Chelsea and now Man United. “Just to get on against United (Rodwell and fellow scorer Dan Gosling were both substitutes) was great, but to score and beat them was the icing on the cake. O’Keeffe wrote: “With a grim predictability born of winning 17 of the last 19 Premier League clashes at Goodison, United took the lead with 15 minutes gone. “Arteta slipped a ball to the teenager who carried it confidently, dummied Johnny Evans and beat Van de Sar with a neat finish that sent Goodison Park into raptures.”

Scientists hope to detect early signs of ovarian cancer using a potentially ‘game-changing’ tampon in a new clinical trial. Researchers from University Hospital Southampton are recruiting 250 women with the ‘Angelina Jolie gene’, which significantly increases their risk of breast and ovarian cancer. David Constable-Phelps, a consultant gynaecological oncology surgeon and co-investigator for the study, said: ‘The ability to detect the earliest signs of ovarian cancer, with a relatively non-invasive test such as the Daye tampon, would be a complete game-changer for women with ovarian cancer. ‘Ovarian cancer commonly has non-specific symptoms in its early and late stages, so the tumour can spread to other organs silently. She added: ‘It could both help them reduce their risk of ovarian cancer development or pick it up in the earliest stages, when it is most treatable.’

He spent much of the time that the game was paused seated alone in the Real dugout. Whether teams should refuse to continue in incidences of racist abuse is a question which has been raised repeatedly in recent years. “If I categorically heard racism and nothing was done about it, I would take my team off the pitch.
