The Dental Council said it was aware of several practices in which unregistered dentists are working. However, a spokesman said it “does not have sufficient powers to protect the public from unregistered dentists”. “Because of the inability to inspect registrations, the Dental Council was unable to act in the eight other cases,” he said. Since 2008, the council has called for a revised Dentists Act, highlighting “significant gaps” in the legislation, particularly its inability to regulate or inspect dental practices. Any Irish investment account needs to encourage participation in capital markets through simplicity, tax certainty and long-term stability. The issue is not that Ireland taxes investment gains. By contrast, direct share investments are taxed at the 33 per cent capital gains tax (CGT) rate. International experience suggests that well-designed retail investment frameworks can increase overall engagement rather than simply shelter existing assets. It is whether we can design a framework that supports prudent, long-term participation rather than discouraging it.

Photograph: Eric LukeFormer CIÉ workers are to march on the office of the Taoiseach in Cork on Monday to highlight the delay in paying them an increase in their pensions. The D1 stamp meant CIÉ workers were only paying 1 per cent of their wages into their statutory pension scheme. “The reasonable expectation of CIÉ employees was that their contribution to the statutory pension schemes would provide them with adequate incomes when they retired and into old age and CIÉ met that contractual obligation by paying annual pension increases up until 2008,“ said Bowen. He said that in May 2025, CIÉ announced pension increases up to 5 per cent, subject to changes to the current statutory pension schemes, and employees on the proposed scheme voted to accept it - but almost 10 months on, the CIÉ pensioners are still waiting.
