Heart rate increases by about 10 beats per minute with every degree of increased body temperature. Normally, sleep is when the body recovers; heart rate slows, blood pressure drops and the parasympathetic nervous system – the ‘rest and digest’ mode – takes over. The new study found that when nighttime bedroom temperatures exceeded 75 degrees, older adults’ nervous systems remained stuck in a higher-alert state. Heart rate increased and heart rate variability, a key marker of recovery, dropped. The combination of increased heart rate, sympathetic nervous system takeover and reduced heart rate variability, a marker of poor recovery, deprives the cardiovascular system of its overnight rest period.

Applicant was the 'stay at home dad' and heavily involved in the child’s care, judge toldA man whose long-term same-sex relationship broke down has obtained a High Court order granting him interim access to a child born through surrogacy. His former partner is the genetic father of the child, now aged under 10, who was born through surrogacy during their relationship. After the relationship broke down, the applicant moved out of the respondent’s home, but had regular access to the child for some months. The respondent decided at that point the applicant should have no further access to the child, the judge said. Counsel for the respondent argued the court could not grant interim access until such a professional report had been obtained.

Norwich City teenager Ajay Tavares is poised to complete his move to Spanish champions Barcelona. The 16-year-old winger flew to Barcelona at the weekend and underwent a medical with the club on Monday ahead of completing his move. Daily Mail Sport reported in January how Barca were closing on Tavares despite Norwich's attempts to keep him plus further interest from RB Leipzig. He has been capped by England at U15, U16 and U17 level, but he also holds a Portuguese passport, which helped facilitate his move to Barcelona. Tavares had played once for Norwich's first team in a pre-season friendly last summer.

Photograph: Hispanolistic/GettyDo you talk about climate change with your family and friends? Younger adults and men talk about it less, according to Climate Change in the Irish Mind – a study which looked at Irish people’s climate change-related beliefs, attitudes, policy preferences and behaviours. Among those who “often” discuss climate change, only three behaviours – avoiding long flights, using renewables, and eating a plant-based diet – were better understood. Climate change can cause extreme weather, and this can bring real consequences for us. Support is closely tied to how often people discuss climate change, says the research.

And yet, as we enter the run-in, there appears to be a proper Premier League title race. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola celebrates after his side scored their second goal during the Premier League win over Newcastle Manchester. The days of a Manchester City or a Liverpool reeling off win after win and accumulated points totals in the high 90s are over, and were a historical aberration. Whether it’s Arsenal or Manchester City who win the league, the likelihood is they’ll do so with about 85 points. In the short term, at probably unacceptable cost, the outcome is balance and, perhaps, an old-fashioned title race in the Premier League in which stamina and nerve are the principal virtues.

Bafta’s error was big on Sunday night - but it was in the editing, or the lack of. No one could have stopped John Davidson - who has Tourette syndrome - yelling out the N-word while two black actors, Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo, were presenting a prize. Not least because it inevitably overshadows what should have been the big story: #BaftasSoWhite can (probably) be put to bed. As a reminder: the hashtag trended most critically in 2020, when no nominees of colour were up for any acting awards, leading to a massive overhaul of Bafta’s rules, regulations and membership demographic. Few organisations have done such radical work – the Oscars and certainly the Globes stagger way behind – yet few are still so perennially lambasted for choices that their members persist in sticking to.
