Before the data centre went to tender, however, the Department of Public Expenditure was told by the Office of Public Works (OPW) the estimate had reached €80m. The data centre is expected to be connected eventually to a solar farm, which will allow it to use renewable energy. It is intended that excess energy from the data centre will eventually power the entire campus, through the development of a district heating scheme.
