Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin said:"Rather perplexingly, the Daily Mail made similar, inaccurate comments about Wetherspoon almost exactly a year ago, as our press release of 4 August 2023, in appendix 1 below, illustrates. APPENDIX 14 August 2023Correction regarding Daily Mail article of 1 August 2023A Daily Mail article of 1 August 2023 was headlined: "Wetherspoons closes more pubs with dozens of boozers across Britain earmarked for closure…". The statement by the Daily Mail that "dozens of boozers across the UK (are) earmarked for closure" also creates a misleading and exaggerated impression. It said that the majority of the Wetherspoon pubs in question "had another [Wetherspoon] pub nearby". That is certainly not the impression the Daily Mail article gave."

Limerick was also the most overcrowded hospital according to the HSE's own figures, with 46 patients waiting for a free bed. The emergency department and services at University Maternity Hospital Limerick are continuing as normal. The Irish Hospital Consultants Association (IHCA) argued it will have severe knock-on consequences for patient health outcomes and expressed concern about the busier winter months. An initial report found that overcrowding in the hospital’s emergency department was “endemic” and doctor and nurse staffing levels are “insufficient”.

The largely unchecked power of social media platforms and oligarchic owners like Elon Musk, himself responsible for amplifying much of the hateful, divisive, and downright lying content he should be moderating, has become a critical issue. The social media platforms failed to act on 89% of these reports, including many using hashtags such as #deathtoislam, #islamiscancer and #raghead. Particularly disgracefully, they found that social media companies were continuing to allow content glorifying the 2019 Christchurch massacre, in which a white supremacist gunman attacked two Mosques and murdered 51 people in Christchurch, New Zealand. The German Network Enforcement Act offers a precedent, requiring social media companies to remove "clearly illegal" content within 24 hours of notification or face fines of up to €50 million. Social media companies should be required to publish regular reports detailing their content moderation practices and compliance with legal standards.
