I don’t doubt that Cork enjoyed the trip home Sunday from Nowlan Park after that win over Kilkenny. Obviously, winning any game makes the journey back more enjoyable, but Ben O’Connor and the management will be particularly happy with how the new players slotted in. Introducing new faces can be a challenge when a team is relatively experienced, but Cork’s newcomers showed up well. Sign in Unlimited access starts here. Try from €1.50 a week.

A South African man, who had "integrated completely" to Ireland, after living in direct provision accommodation for almost six years before moving to Tipperary Town, was deported over the weekend. Guthrie Ward said he had “integrated completely” into Ireland and hoped to be able to return. He secured a Stamp 4 immigration permit in 2022, allowing him to live and work in Ireland without an employment permit. At that time, he was living in direct provision in Waterford and working full time in a service station in Tramore. He spent almost six years in direct provision but moved to Tipperary Town after having to vacate direct provision after the failure of his appeal of the Stamp 4 decision.

Last week, after Tottenham had lost 4-1 at home to Arsenal, Igor Tudor was bullish. This week, after Tottenham had lost 2-1 at Fulham, Tudor was deflated. They were one of the five clubs who led the breakaway to form the Premier League in 1992, and one of the six English clubs involved in the doomed Super League project. The squad that remains is a hotchpotch of promising but largely unproven young talent and stagnating Premier League-proven players. Were Spurs to go down, it would be worse than their relegation in 1977, probably the most shocking relegation since Manchester United in 1974.

The Vancouver Whitecaps and Major League Soccer have been forced to pay $347,000 over a 2024 regular-season game which saw Lionel Messi fail to show up after appearing in promotional material. During his well-hyped first full season in MLS, Messi featured heavily in marketing by the Whitecaps and the league ahead of Inter Miami's trip to Vancouver in May of that year. Advertising the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner allowed the team to ramp up prices and maximize ticket revenue when Miami came to town, with his fellow ex-Barcelona stars and Inter teammates Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets also included in the promotions. His lawyers argued that he was aware of the promotional materials including Messi, Suarez and Busquets before doing so, which 'represented, implied or suggested' that all three of them would play. The Whitecaps and MLS have settled a class-action lawsuit against them for $347,000The Whitecaps and MLS denied liability and any part in the decision for Messi, Suarez and Busquets not to play.

Adults in the Cork Metropolitan Area are taking an estimated 82,000 cars off the road every day by walking, wheeling or cycling instead of driving, according to new figures. The 2025 Walking and Cycling Index from the National Transport Authority showed that across the country, residents in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford have altogether removed 666,000 car journeys daily. This cuts 120,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year, which is equivalent to 1.5m flights from Dublin to London. The findings showed that 66% of adult residents walk or wheel five or more days a week - this was up from 52% in 2023. Looking across a broader national picture, the survey showed a high level of support for more government funding on walking and wheeling, as well as for cycling.

They're renowned for being aloof – and now it turns out your pet cat really won't lift a paw if you need help. Researchers from Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary investigated how untrained pet dogs, pet cats and 16–24–month–old toddlers responded when a familiar person searched for a hidden object. The majority of dogs and children displayed similar behaviour patterns, with more than three–quarters either indicating where the object was or retrieving it. 'Cats were significantly less likely to show spontaneous object–related behaviours than dogs and children when it did not directly benefit them,' the team wrote. However, when the object hidden was a cat's own toy or food, they approached it at a similar rate to dogs and children.

When asked by the Irish Examiner on the eve of tonight’s opening World Cup qualifier against France about her future, the 30-year-old admitted approaches were being handled by her representatives. “I’m into the last six months (of my contract) so technically you’re allowed to speak to other clubs. O’Connor made nine personnel alterations for the game against Kilkenny but on the final scoreboard it was plus ça change. “It's only driving the training even better again, which is great to see. Fellas are really on their toes every day going out, so it's a great thing to have. They're going really well, so we're going down there with a tough game ahead of us. “You’d say we were in Páirc Uí Rinn or Páirc Uí Chaoimh with the support we had from the Cork fans,” remarked O’Leary.

On Monday, the markets were trying to work out what the war meant for shares, energy prices and the world economy. Gas and oil prices, which were already on the rise, headed further into territory which – if sustained – indicate a nasty hit to prices and inflation. Much now depends not only on how the war spreads, but also on how long it lasts. If the war is over in a few weeks, then the wider economic impact will be limited. Then European prices peaked briefly at more than $300 per megawatt hour, but for the second half of 2022 generally remained well over $100.

Wildlife boat tour operators along the Cork and Kerry coasts are being asked to keep their distance from whales, dolphins, and seabirds, under a new code of conduct being trialled. The voluntary code for “responsible marine wildlife watching” has been drawn up in consultation with the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) and other operators, and was launched by the National Parks and Wildlife (NPWS) in Dingle. Kerry alone now has upwards of 25 tour operators - some with multiple boats - along the southwest coast. The code includes guidance to minimise and eliminate disturbance during wildlife watching activities. "But with the growth in eco-tourism and wildlife tourism, it’s important that we emphasise how this can be done responsibly.
