Anyone paying close attention to the entertainment business will be aware that, over the past decade, toxic fandoms have become increasingly out of control. The supposed “war on woke” has fired up an already combustible sense of entitlement among enthusiasts for white men in leotards, white men on dragons and white men in rocket ships. People talk of once being “in” the Harry Potter fandom as others might talk of once being “in” the Church of the Blessed Flying Saucer. This is, in fact, a useless, analogy for what the fandoms might make of Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings. If the folk behind the upcoming Harry Potter TV series want more diverse casting – and they probably will – then that is what they will get.

A new study has examined the enigma of emaciated common dolphins washing up on our beaches or being captured in “bycatch” — the practice of releasing unwanted catch — in recent years. The figures showed 13pc of common dolphins stranded or bycaught off the Irish coast between 2017 and 2019 died from starvation. This compares to 3pc of common dolphins found off the UK coast who starved to death between 1990 and 2006. They concluded: “Further research on dietary consumption and preferences of the contemporary sample set may uncover the root causes of the observed decline in the nutritional health of these [dolphins].”

Stock imageOne of the surest paths into poverty is family separation. That is one of the main findings of a new report from the ESRI dealing with the link between “economic vulnerability” and lone parenthood. Lee Carsley wants to see reaction from England against Finland after Greece lossBy Simon Peach, PA Chief Football Writer, HelsinkiInterim England boss Lee Carsley expects a reaction to the deflating defeat to Greece as he returns to a “more conventional” system against Finland. Jude Bellingham played as a false nine in the absence of injured skipper Harry Kane, who is available as England return to a more familiar formation in Finland on Sunday. “I think it’s always tough, the scrutiny that we’re under,” Carsley said of the criticism that met the defeat to Greece. We didn’t perform as well as we can on the night, and I would expect a reaction tomorrow night. Jack Grealish is also available after joining the England skipper in sitting out the Greece defeat with a knock of his own, but Bukayo Saka and Curtis Jones left the camp ahead of the trip to Finland.
