As Iran’s retaliatory attacks target energy shipments in the region, the conflict has recalled memories of the 1980s “tanker war”. With Iran and Iraq at war, both countries’ forces scattered mines across the Strait of Hormuz and in the Gulf. At least six tankers have been hit in the Gulf since the war began, forcing marine traffic through the strait to a virtual halt. The US has also sunk 17 Iranian ships. The inverse is true – if nobody can sell oil, then Iran can’t either,” said Miller.

In her scathing assessment of her uncle, Mary claimed there "never has been a plan" and that Trump "wreaks havoc" and then "expects other people" to pick up the "rubble of his destruction". Donald Trump has taken us to war at the behest of Saudi Arabia and Israel. But that wouldn't have been enough of a reason if doing so didn't also coincide with his own self-interest." In an address on Truth Social, Trump claimed Iran's "menacing activities directly endanger the United States, our troops, our bases overseas and our allies throughout the world."

Pink-ball Tests will not form part of future Ashes series following talks between England and Australia. Under the guidelines for international cricket’s future tours programme and World Test Championship, both countries have to agree to day-night fixtures if they are to be incorporated into playing schedules. Daily Mail Sport understands the England and Wales Cricket Board are firmly against the idea, believing a series as prestigious as the Ashes does not need them. However, record attendances for Australia’s 4-1 win over Ben Stokes’ team this winter suggest no gimmicks are required to ramp up interest where England are concerned. England have played four day-night Tests across the last three Ashes tours, but next year’s one-off 150th anniversary match at the MCG between March 11 and 15 is set to be the last.

Photograph: AFP via Getty ImagesDespite the undoubted military successes chalked up in the first few days of the war in Iran, Israel and the US are not entirely on the same page when it comes to the war’s aims, and this could cause difficulties down the line. Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Tuesday reiterated that the military campaign will create the conditions for regime change in Iran. “You’re not going to have an endless war because ... this terror regime in Iran is at its weakest point,” he said. “This is going to be a quick and decisive action.”While there is a wide consensus in Israel – including among Netanyahu’s opponents – on the need for regime change, Washington is sending out mixed messages. US president Donald Trump sometimes mentions regime change and sometimes doesn’t.
