Pete Hegseth told a press conference that US forces killed the head of the unit, telling reporters they had "hunted down and killed" the leader. "Also yesterday, the leader of the unit who attempted to assassinate President Trump has been hunted down and killed," he said. "Iran tried to kill President Trump. And President Trump got the last laugh." "An American submarine sunk an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters," Hegseth said.

The Master of the Rotunda, Prof Sean Daly, has welcomed confirmation by the Minister for Health that the Dublin city-centre maternity hospital will not be moved to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown. Speaking on RTÉ radio’s Morning Ireland, Daly said the 2015 plan to co-locate the Rotunda and Connolly hospitals had been “a huge issue”. With regard to concerns about the conservation of the Parnell Square area, Prof Daly said the original 18th-century site, which was part of a legacy from Bartholomew Moss, was always going to be a hospital site. That legacy had always been intended to look after the poor people of Dublin, and the Rotunda was an iconic part of the city of Dublin, he said. It has held back progress, held back investment, and obviously now there is clarity on the policy side that the Rotunda site will remain the site for the maternity hospital,” he told RTÉ radio’s Today with David McCullagh show.

‌Chancellor Rachel Reeves is convening an emergency meeting with energy company executives today as oil and gas prices surge due to the conflict. This witnessed prices at British petrol stations nearly double, following OPEC oil producing nations' embargo on all countries perceived to have supported Israel in the Yom Kippur War. On this occasion, it's Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz - a crucial shipping route utilised to transport oil from the Middle East to the rest of the world - that's causing oil prices to surge. The two main components of the price of petrol are, of course, tax and the price of oil. Such laws exist in other states in the Islamic world – but in the case of Iran, enforcement was vigorous. Will Washington be happy if the Islamic Republic continues its repugnant existence in an emasculated form, like what happened in Venezuela? Why is what Putin has done to Ukraine wrong, when what Trump does to Iran is right? Just like Putin’s “special military operation” in Ukraine, rolling deployment of US bombers and missiles against the governmental infrastructure of the Islamic Republic cannot be classified as war. Or will Washington be happy if the Islamic Republic continues its repugnant existence in an emasculated form – like what happened in Venezuela?

Would the contemptuous references to Helen McEntee as ‘minister for woke’ have been so casually uttered if people had an inkling of what lies beneath the family law courts? Media outlets agreeing to ringfence front page space for reports from the family law courts? The famously strict in-camera rule designed to protect identities under family law becomes rather theoretical in those scenarios. The aims of the pilot, to increase public understanding and awareness of the family court, were being realised. Any man or woman looking for a meaningful International Women’s Day beyond the egregious pinkwashing need look no further.

Photograph:Majid Asgaripour/ReutersResponding to the situation, he pushed for a diplomatic resolution, pointing to the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law that should apply in this situation. Rather than standing by as US president Donald Trump desecrates the principles of the UN Charter that the Irish Government claims to defend, it is time for Ireland to stand up for our values. But US multinationals will not flee the country just because the Irish Government stands up for the principles of global order. Beyond the political costs, the practical stakes for Ireland in this rapidly escalating conflict are also considerable. As a small state, Ireland depends on other countries’ respect for international law to maintain our position and protect our sovereignty.

As a child, one of my jobs was to go to the local shop each morning to get the newspapers. We took The Irish Times and The Irish Press each day; The Sunday Press, The Observer and The Sunday Times on the weekend; and various regional papers on a weekly basis. Instead of the front page, I was looking down at the death notices on the back page of The Irish Times. The woman in the photograph was a Catholic who was engaged to a British solider, and was publicly punished. I don’t know how small children nowadays deal with the news they see coming at them from screens all around them.

Romelu Lukaku welled up after scoring his first goal of the season following the death of his father in September. The Belgian was mobbed by team-mates after scoring a 96th-minute winner on Napoli's trip to Hellas Verona at the weekend. It was an emotional moment for Lukaku after a season during which he has endured bereavement, extortion, and crippling injury. As a result, the funeral took place in Kinshasa, the capital of DR Congo, the nation Roger played for, and the brothers were unable to attend. Celebrating his goal, he took his shirt off and was using it to wipe his tears, but he was booked all the same.

Female Labour MPs are 'incandescent' over the government's failure to include Grok in new measures cracking down on sexualised deepfakes shared online, the Daily Mail has learned. But female Labour MPs are furious the government is now delivering a half-baked ban by only imposing the measures on British apps – not on those based abroad. Offering tools to create deepfake nudes must be banned in the UK regardless of where the company is based.' The government appearing to weaken measures to protect women and girls online comes as Sir Keir has been blasted for running a 'boy's club' in No 10. A government spokesperson said: 'This government is taking robust action to protect women and girls from intimate image abuse, no matter where a platform is based.

President Donald Trump began his second term in office with a promise to be a “peacemaker”. Now the message from Washington is that “the hardest hits have yet to come” in its war on Iran. But the strikes by Iran on US bases and Gulf ports, cities and oil facilities make this ever more likely. As he told The New York Times in January, the sole restraint Mr Trump recognises is “my own morality”. The deaths of US soldiers and the massive financial cost of the war is not playing well with the American public.

Sent Monday to Friday when the Dáil is in sessionGovernments have been involved in evacuation operations for Irish citizens in the recent past. Last year, during the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, arrangements were made for Irish passport holders to travel overland to safety. In 2023, a total of 122 Irish citizens were evacuated from Sudan during a civil war with help from other EU countries. In an interview with The Irish Times, Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee said that as many as 2,000 Irish citizens on holiday, or in transit, have been stranded in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. In addition, there are up to 22,000 Irish citizens living in the region who may need to be flown out of the area should the war widen and intensify.

Paradoxically, not all Irish tenors have Irish tenor voices. It may also follow that you can have an Irish tenor voice and be from somewhere else. It follows, paradoxically, that not all Irish tenors have Irish tenor voices. It may also follow that you can have an Irish tenor voice and be from somewhere else. So although, being born (like the ancestral Buckleys) in Cork, Sullivan was an Irish tenor, he did not have an Irish tenor voice.
