The world energy market does not operate as a perfect single unit, but upheaval in one area still knocks on elsewhere. Gas and oilSo far, energy markets are betting on a shorter conflict. Then, gas was in the spotlight as wholesale prices shot up, eventually feeding through to consumer prices. In the background, wholesale gas prices have risen sharply too, which is important as this is the main fuel used to produce Irish electricity. If the increases in wholesale gas prices run into a longer term and serious rises, then, of course, bills will go up.

'UK's most potholed street' is right here in StaffordshireIt's got 'more craters than the moon'View Image Potholed Barnhurst Lane, in Staffordshire (stock image)A Staffordshire road dubbed Britain's most potholed street has been damaging car tyres for the last 15 years with angry residents saying they are stuck facing war-like trenches. This ravaged road surface, which is riddled with dozens of potholes, is so rough that the council closed the road to traffic. People say it has got to be the most potholed in the country and I'd struggle to disagree. The road had been closed off, presumably because it is in such a state, but motorists were simply driving around the 'road closed' sign. There's more to do, but we're determined to turn things around and deliver visible improvements for Staffordshire residents."

In April 2023, the child's father was ordered to pay the cyclist 4,500 euros in compensation. Following the court ruling on Thursday, the cyclist was also ordered to pay 2,040 euros in court costs. Furious Mr Mpasa said he had chased after the man and managed to make him stop, but the cyclist had been unrepentant. 'He explained what happened and asked us to withdraw the police complaint, but he showed no remorse and did not apologise,' said Mr Mpasa at the time. The closure of special school in Cork this week, previously highlighted for its "alarming” pattern of suspensions, must be a “watershed moment” and a “catalyst for the necessary change”, local TDs have warned. Carrigaline Community Special School remains closed this week, with the school’s patron, Cork Education and Training Board (ETB), telling parents that it needs to “work through a number of issues” at the school. Carrigaline Community Special School was previously highlighted for its 'alarming' pattern of suspensions. It has been granted an additional supernumerary teacher and an additional special needs assistant (SNA) based on identified needs in the school. These additional staff will assist with providing a consistent staffing in the school in the event of any staff absences."

Bar a draw in 2019, since the Festival moved to 28 races in 2016 every other year has been an Irish success. But former champion trainer Paul Nicholls is among those who think it might not be one-way traffic this season. “Nicky (Henderson) has got a good team of horses and I’ve got some nice chances and there’s all those good young trainers that have probably worked for me or for Nicky that are doing really well,” said Nicholls. “I think things are going to be totally different and probably over the next few years. “I realise how good the Irish are and I’m a huge fan of Gordon’s (Elliott), of Willie’s and of Henry’s (de Bromhead).

Tánaiste Simon Harris said there are an additional 26 posts allocated in the department for the EU presidency and 'we’re utilising, in the first instance, the skills that exist'. Photograph: Brian Lawless/PA WireThe potential for conflicts of interest to arise from Government plans to use staff from corporate law and accountancy firms during Ireland’s European Union presidency has been downplayed by Tánaiste Simon Harris. Last weekend The Irish Times reported that two Government departments – Enterprise and Climate – are set to temporarily take on private sector staff to provide expertise during the presidency in the second half of 2026. Was fine spring weather ever needed as badly to drive out winter’s cold from the soil? People always expect winds during this month and the old aphorism that March ‘comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb’ has some credence. Saintly promiseThere’s a wealth of weather lore around March. A common belief amongst previous generations was that if it was preceded by dry weather, the month itself would be wet. As St Patrick’s Day is the middle of spring, the weather is supposed to improve from that point onwards.

Laufey is Laufey Lín Bing Jónsdóttir. She is cool, her music is cool, her twin sister is cool, her jazz arrangements are cool, her family are cool and her country, obviously – from sticking it to the banks to producing Bjork - is extremely cool. A finance executive, it was his jazz collection that introduced a young Laufey to the charms of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. While her twin went to St Andrews in Scotland, Laufey went to Berkley College of Music in Boston on a Presidential Scholarship. My chances now of a “Cool Dads Enjoy Laufey” T-shirt are minimal.

Nine eagle species engage in ‘this apparently inexplicable biological waste’. As in England and Wales, shooting and poisoning are blamed for the demise. The species has been extinct in Ireland since 1912, apart from a single nest at Fair Head in 1960. As in England and Wales, shooting and poisoning are blamed for the demise. Ringing a chick, I hoped it might help found a new Irish eagle dynasty.
