While diplomacy moves forward, tensions remain high, with Washington increasing military pressure and Iran highlighting missile upgrades and a shift toward offensive deterrence. When asked directly about Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Trump suggested that mounting US pressure, diplomatic and military, had put Tehran in a precarious position. Iran’s ISNA news agency also confirmed Oman as the host for the upcoming talks.

The kind of readers I have seen in Calcutta is nowhere else to be found across the country.” Veteran publisher Rajendra Kumar Mehra of Rupa & Co. commented in the course of his acceptance speech after being felicitated on Senior Citizen’s Day at the Book Fair last Friday. The 77-year-old publisher, who grew up in Calcutta and moved the business to Delhi in 1970 after starting out under his granduncle’s stewardship in their Bankim Chatterjee Street outlet, spoke in Bengali. “I asked people in my office to come over and find out from readers what they are looking for. Our earlier recipients in this category are Debajyoti Datta of Sishu Sahitya Samsad and Ranjan Sarkar of Ananda Publishers. We also give two other awards to a voracious reader and a veteran author,” said Tridib Chatterjee, general secretary of the Publishers and Booksellers Guild.

Certain nooks and corners of the township have started getting demarcated as street dog feeding zones. Boards are coming up bearing the name of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) to announce the stations as “designated dog feeding place”. In this ward, feeding zones have come up near CB Block community centre, near Vidyasagar Abasan, and around BA-CA Park. ADVERTISEMENT“I had asked residents to suggest suitable feeding zones but no quality response emerged, even from dog lovers. So, feeding zones would be required in every lane.”She also says the time duration mentioned on the boards cannot be maintained.

For football fans who believe that nothing beats the stadium experience, here’s scientific proof — from their heart rates. “This was a striking finding — we did not expect match days to stand out so clearly from non-match days,” Fuchs told this newspaper. Elevated heart rates in combination with alcohol are known to increase the risk of arrhythmias — irregular heart beats — and other cardiac events that might be relevant during high-stress sports events. Studies had over the past decade recorded increases in spectators’ heart rate, blood pressure and stress hormones during high-stakes football matches. Fuchs said the novelty of the new study lay in tracking sports’ fans heart rates during their everyday lives and comparing them with those on match days.

NEW DELHI: An analysis of mental health trends in the capital indicates a significant shift, with chronic emotional distress and daily coping challenges now outpacing acute crises. Data from Mpower, an initiative of the Aditya Birla Education Trust, reveals that Delhi residents are increasingly seeking help for low moods and feelings of getting overwhelmed, irritability, and exhaustion tied to urban stress. “Often people do not know what to call it, but they know they are not coping,” said Parveen Shaikh, president of Mpower. To fill this gap, Mpower has pioneered low-barrier interventions. A recent free Art Therapy workshop in Delhi provided a non-verbal, safe space for expression, representing a broader strategy to make mental health support more accessible and stigma free.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has quashed a regulation banning the migration or transfer of MBBS students between medical colleges, holding it to be “manifestly unreasonable and arbitrary” and violative of the Constitution. A bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia rejected the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) justification that student migration was prone to misuse, observing that the “mere possibility of abuse cannot be a ground to deny legitimate rights of a citizen”. The HC struck down Regulation 18 of the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023, and directed the NMC to frame a “proper policy” permitting migration of students, subject to appropriate conditions.

Mamata Banerjee has become the first serving chief minister in the country to argue a petition in the Supreme Court. Ms Banerjee listed some of these alleged infirmities. Bengal’s Opposition, which walks a step behind Ms Banerjee when it comes to harnessing optics, has dismissed the chief minister’s day in court as theatrics. But in an age when politics is usually shaped more by the art of messaging than the message itself, Ms Banerjee, it must be said, has stolen a march on her rivals. With elections on the horizon, the BJP would not like to play catch-up to Ms Banerjee.

The recent sentencing of a high school physics teacher in China to 18 years’ imprisonment offers cold comfort to the parents of the 23-year-old woman whom he drove to suicide. When gossip about the teacher and the student reached the latter's mother, she confronted them both. In 2018, a 17-year-old had jumped to her death, egged on by a crowd both online and offline, for the same reason: two years of battling depression after her high school class teacher molested her. Only after her public suicide was the teacher arrested, but the court refused to make the crucial link between her suicide and the assault. As students prepare for the pre-university exam, high school becomes their second home and teachers become their guardians.

The petitioners argued that there was no need to mention caste discrimination as it would be covered under the general definition of ‘Discrimination’, “which includes all forms of discriminatory treatment, including caste”. A separate mention of caste discrimination is necessary in addition to its inclusion in the general definition of discrimination. Discrimination thus relates to social groups such as caste, tribe, race, colour or gender and not to an individual. At the same time, discrimination may differ among social groups with respect to the source and the nature of discrimination. This implies that the argument by the petitioner that caste discrimination of SC/ST/OBC should not be mentioned separately is not sustainable.
