Roads across Calcutta have been dug up to lay drainage and water pipelines, narrowing the road width and often reducing streets to single-lane carriageways. However, the reduced road width is causing traffic snarls, and the roads have also become dusty. The pipes stacked by the roadside are for the drainage network that will be laid underground. KMC officials said new drainage lines will be laid under nearly 5km of roads, which will include Lee Road, Justice Dwarakanath Road, Heyshyam Road, Allenby Road and Woodburn Road. India’s tea exports climbed to a record high in 2025, buoyed by a sharp rise in shipments to Iraq and China, underscoring resilient global demand even as geopolitical trade currents remain unsettled. In China, exports have more than doubled to 16.13 mkg from 6.24 mkg in 2024. Indian teas were subjected to a 50 per cent tariff in the US from August 27, leading to export grinding to a near halt. Indian tea now attracts zero tariff in the US, the commerce ministry informed on Saturday. “The only threat to our exports is the EU / UK, whose share is over 10 per cent of our exports.
NALGONDA: A car lost control and plunged into the Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP) canal at Mukundapuram in Nidamanoor mandal on Saturday evening, leaving a woman dead and her husband missing. The accident occurred around 7.30 pm when Pullaiah and his wife Padma, residents of Kampa Sagar in Tripuraram mandal, were travelling in the car. However, due to adverse conditions, the vehicle could not be retrieved on Saturday night. The car was pulled out of the canal on Sunday morning. While Padma’s body was recovered, Pullaiah remains missing.

Hundreds of children across the world have lost their lives to similar online games, such as the Blue Whale challenge and the Momo challenge. The central concern here is a pattern of compulsive digital intoxication among minors and teenagers unfolding in a setting with limited mental health support. It also constricts a child’s social world to digital interactions that reward extreme emotions. When access to the digital world is suddenly curtailed without therapeutic support, withdrawal distress coupled with family conflict may intensify underlying vulnerabilities. Effective action need not deny children access to useful technology.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday accused Congress MP and state unit president Gaurav Gogoi of undertaking a “secret visit” to Pakistan in 2013 without informing authorities. India and the United States of America have reached an accord on the framework for their trade deal under which Washington will levy 18% tariff on a range of imports from India. The trade deal with the US could also dim the intensity of Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat. Just over a week ago, the government notified coking coal as a critical and strategic material under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act. India has coking coal reserves of 38 billion tonnes but still imported 57 million tonnes in 2024-25. The high-level committee on Viksit Bharat goals had recommended the coking coal notification, which now presumably will run aground.

Two men were arrested on Saturday for the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old student on the eve of Saraswati Puja. Kolkata Police commissioner Supratim Sarkar made a surprise visit to two police stations across the city in plainclothes on Saturday night, exactly a week after taking charge, to check their reaction and response to a common man’s plight. It was a sub-inspector sitting next to him at the sheresta (front desk of a police station) who whispered “CP” when the ASI recognised Sarkar. Sarkar visited the Survey Park police station next, around midnight. Police stations in the city have often been accused of “misbehaviour” and “lukewarm response” when people go to report a crime.
