Like we continue to remember them till this day, GhanaWeb brings you a recap of the conversation we had with some of the survivors of the disaster to recount how events unfolded. Daniel Oduro also interacted with relatives of some of the victims of the May 9 Stadium disaster. According to the Health Centre, pregnant women in the community are continuously losing their newborn babies because the women drink water contaminated with chemicals used by the illegal miners. A Midwife in charge of the Sewum health Centre Gifty Adwoa Adjanor disclosed that the facility has been recording cases of newborn babies without nose, eyes, ears and mouth. The Midwife is thus appealing to traditional leaders and other residents in the area to support the renewed fight against galamsey to enable pregnant women to give birth to healthy children. Sewum is a cocoa growing area and also a notorious illegal mining community in the Aowin District of the Western North region. Meanwhile, the percentage of pregnant women being delivered by professional midwives in Ghana has increased to eighty percent.

He attributed this to the government's failure to fulfill its campaign promises ahead of the 2020 general elections. According to Prof Alabi, the insecurity in the country also portends ill consequences for Ghana, saying the country “is not safe”. For him, there are uncountable villages all over Ghana and wondered how the One Village-One Dam promise could be fulfilled. Dubbed the ‘#FixTheCountry demo’, the protest was premised on issues similar to Kume Preko. While Kume Preko happened on May 11, #FixTheCountry demonstration, took place on May 9. Ahead of the Kume Preko demonstration, there were threats by state security agencies to deal with the demonstrators and they indeed delivered with several brutalities recorded. Similarly, the Ghana Police Service cautioned the #FixTheCountry against defying the court order that bars them from demonstrating and promised to deal with them.

Nancy Kyeraa mysteriously went missing in May 2007 when she was three years six months old, an incident that brought the whole community to a standstill. A social announcement that was made on the then Drobo-based radio station, Radio Omega on May 3, 2007, yielded no results.
