What is new about the MoU is Ethiopia’s consideration of conferring formal recognition on Somaliland as an independent state. Somaliland’s push for recognition under the MoU is part of its broader effort to gain international recognition as an independent state, separate from Somalia. However, its quest for international recognition has been challenging, as most countries and international organizations continue to view it as part of Somalia. Given the heated domestic politics and geopolitical implications, what is the benefit of publicly pronouncing an MoU without finalized details? Political implications and geopolitical repercussionsFor Ethiopia, the MoU diverts attention from internal conflicts, famine, and economic woes.

By Concerned EthiopiansIn 2021, Concerned Ethiopians selected Ethiopia as the Country of the Year. For this reason, Concerned Ethiopians (CE) has selected Fano Freedom Fighters as “2023’s Ethiopians of the Year”. Concerned Ethiopians considered selecting the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church as “2023’s Ethiopia’s Institution of the Year” but chose Fano as its impact in 2023 was much more profound. It is imperative that Diaspora Fano support groups and Advocacy councils work with congressional staff to push for US support of Fano. That is exemplified by our reasoning for choosing Fano Freedom Fighters as “2023’s Ethiopians of the Year.”The following poem shared with Concerned Ethiopians succinctly captures why we chose Fano Freedom Fighters as “2023’s Ethiopians of the Year”.

A retrospective of her work, including images from Falkland Road, is currently on show in Berlin, Germany until mid-January. An Ethiopian recipe for a wine called tej uses just three ingredients — water, yeast and honey. An Ethiopian recipe dating back thousands of years for a wine called “tej” uses just three ingredients — water, yeast and honey. “Ethiopian honey wine, or tej fermented beverage, is made from honey, and dates back more than 3,000 years, the time of Queen of Sheba,” Negussie said. “She got a chance to try both wines, the grape wine and the honey wine, and she was falling in love with the honey wine,” Negussie said. “And she learned how the honey wine is made from the honey and what kind of yeast is right for the honey wine.

January 4, 2024Somalia is receiving an outpouring of support following a controversial deal struck between neighboring Ethiopia and the breakaway region of Somaliland earlier this week. Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somaliland leader Muse Bihi Abdi signed on Monday a memorandum of understanding that would give Ethiopia access to the Red Sea. Under the deal, Ethiopia will be allowed to use the port of Berbera in the breakaway region, and in exchange, Addis Ababa will recognize Somaliland as an independent state. Somalia vehemently rejected the deal, describing it as a violation of its own sovereignty. Egypt, which is at odds with Ethiopia over the latter’s controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), also condemned the deal and stressed the need to respect Somalia's territorial integrity.

Nationals Leader David Littleproud has delivered a dare to the “morally bankrupt” Animals Australia regarding the international live export industry. "Investment confidence is gone because they are making production decisions now in Western Australia about sheep … there is no reason why we are shutting this industry down," Mr Littleproud told Sky News Australia. "There will be 3,000 livelihoods lost in Western Australia because of this. "These animal activists are morally bankrupt – go and get photos off these Sudanese and Ethiopian boats and show the Australian people. "I dare Animals Australia to go and do that and I’m sure the Australian public will be behind this industry continuing."

The port deal has severely strained Somali-Ethiopian relations and increased anti-Ethiopian sentiment in southern Somalia, which will likely weaken regional counterterrorism cooperation and energize al Shabaab. [14] Shortly after Ethiopia and Somaliland announced the deal, Somalia recalled its ambassador to Ethiopia for consultations. The Ethiopia-Somaliland port deal prompted an anti-Ethiopian backlash in southern Somalia. [30] Al Shabaab has historically capitalized on anti-Ethiopian sentiment to boost support among the Somali population across the Horn of Africa. [56] An Ethiopian port will only amplify Eritrea’s longer-term concerns of Ethiopian aggression, even if it allays short-term fears of an imminent invasion.

The body of the passenger jet, an Airbus 350, was made of carbon-composite fibers. The crash may become an important test of the safety of composite materials for some uses in aircraft. The larger Japan Airlines (JAL) passenger jet was given permission to use the runway where the coast guard plane, a Bombardier Dash-8, was preparing for takeoff. The FAA has said for more than 20 years that there are dangers related to composite materials. Although the inside of the passenger plane filled with smoke after the explosion, all 379 passengers were able to escape.
