Delegates said a separate deal between Airbus and Ethiopian Airlines for 10 A350-900s had also been held up by last-minute negotiations between that airline and the A350 engine maker. A major Emirates order would help rebalance the show after Boeing and engine maker GE dominated the opening with a $50 billion order including 90 777X jets on Monday. But a common factor between those talks and the high-profile Emirates deal was tough negotiations on prices. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Wednesday visited the Dubai Airshow, where he was seen briefly meeting with executives from Lockheed Martin and Saab . Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum and Emirates airline Chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum were also seen at the show.

Ethiopian Airlines placed an order yesterday (Nov. 14), including 20 Boeing 737-9 and 737-11 Max single-aisle airliners. The deal comes five years after the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max that killed all 157 on board. Fallout from that accident, as well as a fatal Max crash involving Indonesia’s Lion Air five months earlier, led to worldwide grounding of the Max fleet. In announcing the current agreement with Boeing, Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew told reporters at the Dubai Air Show, “We believe we have checked and confirmed that the design defect of that aircraft has been fully corrected by Boeing. Yesterday’s Ethiopian Airlines order also included 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliner widebody aircraft.

Demera, an Ethiopian restaurant in Uptown, is entering the third year of raising money to aid the humanitarian crisis in Tigray, Ethiopia. Since 2007, chef Tigist Reda has been creating beautiful spreads of Ethiopian food at Demera; bringing people together over heaping platters of meat and veggie stews, served atop freshly made injera bread. Reda was born and raised in Ethiopia, and her restaurant feels like an extension of that, bringing a bit of her hometown to Chicago. I've got to help," Stegner said. Reda is using her voice and her kitchen and her friends to help in the best way they know how.

Deliveries of food aid from the United States to Ethiopia will resume throughout the country, the US Development Agency (USAID) announced on Tuesday, following the conclusion of an agreement to monitor the distribution of aid. "These far-reaching and significant reforms will profoundly change the food aid system in Ethiopia and ensure that aid reaches those suffering from acute food insecurity," USAID spokeswoman Jessica Jennings said in a statement. The US agency had already announced in early October a limited resumption of food aid deliveries to meet the needs of thousands of refugees in Africa's second most populous country. Around 17% of Ethiopia's 120 million inhabitants depend on international food aid. But last June, the UN and the United States suspended the distribution of food aid throughout the country because of "widespread and coordinated" misappropriation.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — The lead U.S. development agency plans to restart food aid deliveries for millions of people across Ethiopia in December, five months after it took the extraordinary step of halting its nationwide program over a massive corruption scheme by local officials. About one-sixth of Ethiopians received food aid before discovery of the food theft early this year. USAID and the U.N.’s World Food Program suspended food aid to Ethiopia’s Tigray region in mid-March after uncovering the colossal scheme. The agency previously sought to remove Ethiopian government officials from having any role in aid processes to stem corruption. The WFP restarted aid to refugees in Ethiopia in October but is yet to resume food aid nationwide.

The company will buy 20 737 MAX aircraft, as well as 11 additional 787 Dreamliners during the Dubai Air Show. The east African airline CEO Mesfin Tasew, says it’s only the beginning. “The accident on the max (737-max) that happened before four years was a very, very sad accident. It has left a big scar in our memory, and we always feel sad for the victims of that accident. We have checked and confirmed that the design defect of that aircraft has been fully corrected by Boeing, and we have renewed our confidence in that aircraft.” Boeing described the sale as the largest-ever purchase of Boeing aeroplanes in African history, without disclosing a price point for the deal.
