CAIRO – 14 June 2023: The death penalty of the killer of Mansoura University Student Nayera Ashraf, Mohamed Adel, was carried out at Gamasa Prison early in the morning on Wednesday almost a year after he had been handed the sentence and months after it had been upheld. Egypt’s Court of Cassation upheld in February the death sentence against Mohamed Adel who killed his colleague Mansoura University Student Nayera Ashraf last year. According to investigations, Adel deliberately killed Ashraf for rejecting to marry him. The convict pleaded guilty before Mansoura Criminal Court in June, saying "I was fully sane when I committed the crime." The prosecution further found several threatening messages from the murderer to the victim’s mobile phone saying that he is going to kill her.

Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, has said that the Dabaa nuclear plant project, with a capacity of 4,800 megawatts, progresses according to its schedule, and it is expected to be completed between 2028 and 2031. Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces militia (RSF) has denied involvement in the recent conflict in West Darfur, instead pointing the finger at the Sudanese military. In a statement released on Wednesday, the RSF stated that it was committed to the “principle of neutrality” in regards to the crisis in West Darfur. The governor of West Darfur state, Khamis Abbakar, has called for international intervention to stop what he describes as “genocide.” Abbakar claims that civilians are being killed randomly and in large numbers. The Darfur region of Sudan has experienced periods of conflict since the early 2000s, leading to the displacement of millions of people and the deaths of 300,000 due to attacks from Arab militias known as the Janjaweed. He stressed the need to end looting and expand access to aid for those who need it the most.

Mohamed Adel, who murdered his university colleague, Naira Ashraf, was executed on Wednesday morning at Gamasa General Prison. Adel stabbed Ashraf several times with a knife, then slit her neck at the gates of Mansoura University in Daqahliya Governorate. Naira Ashraf’s lawyer, Khaled Abdel Rahman, filed a compensation claim of LE10 million against Adel. “One of the reasons is that Mohamed Adel’s mother continues to mock and abuse Naira and her family,” Abdel Rahman said. Abdel Rahman confirmed that in case the court orders a compensation be paid to Ashraf’s family by Adel and his family and they are unable to pay, imprisonment will be applied to them.

The Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah is expected to start on Monday, the International Astronomical Center announced. “Most countries of the Islamic world will investigate the crescent of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah on Sunday, June 18, 2023 CE, corresponding to Dhu al-Qi’dah 29, 1444 AH,” the center announced in a statement on its official page. “On that day, seeing the crescent is possible with difficulty using telescopes from the center and west of the Islamic world, and therefore Monday, June 19, is expected to be the first day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah in many countries,” the statement added. The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) expected that Tuesday, June 27, will be the Day of Arafa, and Wednesday, June 28, the first day of Eid al-Adha. According to the NRIAG, the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, where many Muslims fast starts Monday.

CAIRO - 13 June 2023: Planning and Economic Development Minister Hala el Saeid had a meeting on Tuesday with Omani Minister of Economy Said bin Muhammad Al Saqri to discuss means of boosting bilateral cooperation. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the G20 meeting, currently in session in India from June 11 to 13, according to a statement by the Planning Ministry. The meeting took up means of strengthening technical cooperation between the two countries and Egypt's support for the Sultanate of Oman in the field of macroeconomics and development, the statement said. Saeid added Egypt and the Sultanate of Oman have strong ties, stressing Egypt's keenness on shoring up cooperation with Oman and transferring its expertise to the Omani side in various domains, it added. She invited the Sultanate of Oman to join the initiative of the greening national investment plans, the statement said.
