CAIRO – 15 June 2023: Amr Ali, the coordinator of the April 6 Youth Movement, said support to entrepreneurship in Egypt requires eliminating bureaucracy, which imposes restrictions on entrepreneurs. Ali made the remarks on Thursday in a session on youth empowerment in entrepreneurship within the topics of the youth committee on the social track of the National Dialogue. During the session, National Dialogue's Social Track Rapporteur Khaled Abdel Aziz highlighted the need to provide support to youth through the available resources that should also be developed. In parallel to the entrepreneurship session, the National Dialogue’s social track also held a session around challenges and aspirations linked to healthcare in Egypt. Labor Minister Hassan Shehata met International Organization for Migration (IOM) Director General, António Vitorino, discussed joint projects. Shehata called for accelerating the implementation of all joint projects and programs with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), citing the Pre-departure Orientation (PDO) unit that will be opened in the coming period. The unit is aimed at training potential migrants and educating them about their rights and duties before they leave their country to work abroad. A Magnet Foundation report has shown that the funds raised by startups in Africa during the first quarter (1Q) of this year declined significantly compared to the same period last year. According to the report, startups in Africa raised about $561m during the first three months of this year, compared to $1.3bn for the same period last year. The report said that the deals in the first quarter of this year amounted to about 113 deals, making it the lowest quarter of deals since the second quarter of 2020 and the lowest financing quarter in terms of deals since the first quarter of 2021. According to the report, South Africa overtook Nigeria and Kenya to become the second most funded region on the continent. Egypt, with the support of the Halan deal, maintained its position as the best funded geographic region.

Misr Chemical Industries (MCI) initially agreed with two retail private sector companies to establish a new company with an authorized capital of EGP 1bn and an issued capital of EGP 600m. It explained that the new company will undertake the implementation of the chlorine granules project. It added that the suggested structure for the company will be divided as follows: 12% for the Chemical Industries Holding Company, 12% for MCI, and 38% for Concord for Engineering and Contracting. The MCI announced that it received the initial approval of the Chemical Industries Holding Company for the project. The company explained that it is communicating with banks, and no agreement has been reached with any bank so far.

CAIRO – 14 June 2023: The death penalty of the killer of Mansoura University Student Nayera Ashraf, Mohamed Adel, was carried out at Gamasa Prison early in the morning on Wednesday almost a year after he had been handed the sentence and months after it had been upheld. Egypt’s Court of Cassation upheld in February the death sentence against Mohamed Adel who killed his colleague Mansoura University Student Nayera Ashraf last year. According to investigations, Adel deliberately killed Ashraf for rejecting to marry him. The convict pleaded guilty before Mansoura Criminal Court in June, saying "I was fully sane when I committed the crime." The prosecution further found several threatening messages from the murderer to the victim’s mobile phone saying that he is going to kill her.

Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, has said that the Dabaa nuclear plant project, with a capacity of 4,800 megawatts, progresses according to its schedule, and it is expected to be completed between 2028 and 2031. Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces militia (RSF) has denied involvement in the recent conflict in West Darfur, instead pointing the finger at the Sudanese military. In a statement released on Wednesday, the RSF stated that it was committed to the “principle of neutrality” in regards to the crisis in West Darfur. The governor of West Darfur state, Khamis Abbakar, has called for international intervention to stop what he describes as “genocide.” Abbakar claims that civilians are being killed randomly and in large numbers. The Darfur region of Sudan has experienced periods of conflict since the early 2000s, leading to the displacement of millions of people and the deaths of 300,000 due to attacks from Arab militias known as the Janjaweed. He stressed the need to end looting and expand access to aid for those who need it the most.
