CBC has learned that the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has used radio equipment and technology from the Chinese company Hytera Communications. The United States government has banned Hytera, which is partly owned by the Chinese government, due to national security concerns. The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has blacklisted the company for posing "an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States or the security and safety of United States persons." Canquest worked with Hytera Canada to build the radio communications infrastructure and sold Hytera radio equipment to CBSA. "CBSA takes communications security seriously and has formal processes in place to assess communications security and mitigate risk.

Journalists Saba Eitizaz, Rachel Gilmore and Erica Ifill spoke about their experiences facing online hate and harassment. One of the major forms of cyberbullying that female journalists face are emails that threaten to attack and sexually assault them for their reporting. They are currently in the process of speaking with law enforcement agencies across the country to demand penalties for those who commit online hate against journalists. Mendicino called on more journalists to come forward and share their experiences in order to encourage law enforcers to take swift and effective action to protect journalists from harm.

As the triple threat of viruses — influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID-19 — circulates, student absences from school this fall have surged, when compared with previous years, according to data obtained by the Star from several boards. At the Toronto District School Board, the largest in the country with roughly 237,000 students, absences in November were up significantly. Between Nov. 7 and 25, there were about 584,000 absences in total — a student can have multiple absences. And about 12 per cent of high school students were away that week, compared with the seven to eight per cent in earlier years. In late November, both the Durham public board and Ottawa-Carleton District School Board voted against moves to bring back masking requirements.
