The Omicron variant of the virus that causes COVID-19 was last year's unpleasant holiday surprise. More than a year later, a loosely knit group of "disease detectives" across Canada continues to keep watch for key mutations. Poon, Brinkman and dozens of other trackers across Canada meet weekly, virtually, applying their computational and modelling skills to COVID-19. Beyond COVID-19, Brinkman hopes to apply the tools scientists have developed during the pandemic to study other troublesome infections, like influenza. "We are definitely going to be seeing new variants," Brinkman said.
Seeing the war experience of Ukrainians brings back my own memories of fleeing Syria. His family fled the war in Syria and is now a Canadian citizen. My friends and I had decided to skip school that day in our hometown of Aleppo in Syria. We ran back and saw that the whole city was locked down and there were army and police officers everywhere. Fortunately for my family, my mother was able to apply to the United Nations for asylum and was accepted.
Five Eastern farm groups call for fertilizer reimbursementAGovernment has not found a way to directly reimburse producers. Ottawa—The $34 million in tariffs that farmers in Central and Eastern Canada paid on Russian fertilizer in the spring should be reimbursed directly to them, five farm groups say. The tariffs collected from farmers should not be a cost borne by them as part of growing food, said the Ontario Bean Growers, Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario, Grain Farmers of Ontario, Atlantic Grains Council and Grain Growers of Quebec. “Farmers can provide information on the tariff monies they paid and can be reimbursed directly,” the groups said in a statement. I know that is not exactly a rebate to each individual and each business.”It is technically not possible to directly rebate every dollar that was paid.

Before the war with Russia, our local “club of successful women” in Ukraine held a meeting on New Year’s Eve. Then the war entered the life of the Ukrainian people, and taught us not to make plans. On the eve of this new war, European politicians were sure that Ukraine would fall in the first week. The war between Ukraine and Russia is a war between democracy and dictatorship. Whatever your other plans and resolution for 2023, please, be yourself and preserve that strong spirit of democracy for future generations.
Thousands in eastern Ontario were without power after a storm hit over the holiday weekend. People in parts of southeastern Ontario, along Lake Ontario, continue to dig out after a storm with blowing snow and up to 100 km/h wind gusts walloped much of the region. Main roads were passable by Sunday in Prince Edward County, with secondary streets opening on Monday. Multiple vehicles became stranded as snow drifts covered. Hydro One said road closures, broken hydro poles and tree branches were some of the biggest obstacles in getting power restored to certain areas.

As COVID-19 approaches its fourth year, Omicron continues to mutate and become more immune-evasive, health officials say. In December, the World Health Organization said variants descending from Omicron show more capacity to escape our immune system. A mutation is a change in the genetic code of the COVID-19 virus. Or the mutation could be harmful to the virus if your immune system gains an advantage over the pathogen. Despite the advantages of the immune system and vaccinations, about 50 Canadians a week continue to die of COVID-19.
