Alberta premier won’t commit to sovereignty act to rebut feds’ ‘just transition’ planEDMONTON — Premier Danielle Smith won’t commit to using Alberta's controversial sovereignty act to rebut looming federal “just transition” legislation, which she calls an existential threat to her province’s bedrock oil and gas industry. “I have to see what it is that (Prime Minister Justin Trudeau) has planned,” Smith told reporters in Calgary on Tuesday. “It (the sovereignty act) is one more tool in us pushing back against Ottawa. Last week, federal Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said Ottawa will move ahead this spring with legislation to provide the framework for the transition plan. We’re a leader on carbon technology, as opposed to (Ottawa) acting like somehow we’re late to the party on this.

One of the main reasons that Cuban migrants are fleeing to the United States is due to the Cuban Adjustment Act, a U.S. law that grants special immigration benefits to Cubans. Under this law, Cuban migrants who arrive in the United States are allowed to stay and apply for legal permanent residency after one year. Many Cuban migrants are willing to take the risk of making the dangerous journey across the Florida Straits in order to reach the United States. The journey to the United States is treacherous and many Cuban migrants do not make it. Despite the dangers of the journey, many Cuban migrants are willing to take the risk in the hope of finding a better life in the United States.

Poilievre mum on Tory MP’s ‘illegal refugees’ comment, calls for Roxham Road closureOTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre called for the closure of the Roxham Road irregular border crossing on Tuesday, but sidestepped questions about one of his MPs denying help to a family who used it to enter the country. The Tory leader argued Tuesday that fixing the problem could lead to fewer people crossing through unofficial entry points such as Roxham Road. Radio-Canada reported last month that Quebec Conservative MP Richard Martel recently refused to help a family that was facing deportation after having entered Canada through Roxham Road in 2018, calling them "illegal refugees." Poilievre did not directly answer when asked about Martel's comments Tuesday, but said the Liberal government should renegotiate the Canada-U.S. agreement "in order to close Roxham Road." In December, in a French interview with The Canadian Press,José Nicola Lopez said that his sister-in-law Leticia Cruz and her son had crossed into Canada via Roxham Road to join their relatives in 2018.

government says no legal action over social media post on woman’s hospital deathHALIFAX — Nova Scotia’s Justice Department said Tuesday it won’t pursue legal action against a politician who posted information about a woman who died in hospital after a seven-hour wait for a doctor. “The email did threaten to take legal action against me if I did not remove the post,” Smith-McCrossin told reporters on Monday. The Justice Department’s Friday email, obtained following a request to Smith-McCrossin’s office, advises her that health information is protected under the personal Health Information Act and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. “If the personal health information continues to be disseminated on social media, we will consider all available legal options." Holthoff has since told his wife’s story to several media outlets and provided details of her final hours in hospital.

PITTSBURGH — A group of citizen scientists have observed a substantial influx of nurdles — small plastic pellets about the size of a lentil — in the Ohio River, which provides drinking water to more than five million people. But these particular nurdles represent just a tiny fraction of the microplastics plaguing the Ohio River and other freshwater bodies across Pennsylvania and the country. What’s happening with the influx of nurdles in the Ohio River exemplifies how hard it is to track down the sources of such pollution and determine who is responsible for cleaning it up. Credit: James CatoNurdles found in the Ohio River by the Mountain Watershed Association. Microplastics pervasive in fresh water Plastic pollution in oceans has gotten lots of attention, but researchers are now discovering that microplastic pollution in fresh water is also pervasive.

The proposed police budget increase is $50 million siphoned away from families who are facing an uphill battle with rising costs of living. The harm inflicted on Indigenous and Black communities by police continues to be very real, a fact clearly acknowledged by the TPS. Instead of adding $50 million to our police budget, let’s instead invest in healing our communities. Let’s invest this money in education, recreation, child care, housing, health, climate change mitigation; measures that are proven to dramatically improve public health and safety. © Sally Cornies A stag with garden netting draping from his antlers was spotted last Friday in the Lower Sahali neighbourhood of Kamloops, B.C. A Kamloops, B.C., buck with garden netting on his head is the latest in a list of Interior deer that have been inadvertently decorating themselves over the last few years. "When he [Kamloops deer] tried to walk, he would step on it and stop — it was just the saddest thing to see." SPCA warned the public against leaving any Halloween or Christmas decorations outside near wilderness areas from mid-October to December, the mating season for deer. The Conservation Officer Service urges anyone seeing an entangled deer to call its hotline at 1-877-952-7277 for assistance.
