A Saskatchewan First Nation says a ground-penetrating radar search at a former residential school has revealed more than 2,000 anomalies, while a physical search also found what is believed to be a child’s jawbone fragment that is more than 100 years old. Areas for the search were selected after testimonials from former students and elders who witnessed or heard stories of what happened at the school. “In just Phase 1, which is just the open area around the site itself, we acquired over 2,000 confirmed hits … does that mean there’s 2,000 unmarked graves? The school opened in 1884 and closed in 1998, making it one of the last residential schools to close. The Indian Residential Schools Resolution Health Support Program has a hotline to help residential school survivors and their relatives suffering trauma invoked by the recall of past abuse.

In late December, eight teenage girls who had reportedly met online decided to meet in-person in downtown Toronto on a Saturday night. Three of the teens were 13 years old, three were 14 years old and two were 16 years old. The defendant’s developmental age (14 or 24 years old), chronological age (14 or 24 years old) and race (white, Black or Indigenous) were varied. We found that mock jurors’ responses varied according to developmental age: a developmentally 24-year-old was given more guilty verdicts than a developmentally 14-year-old. When the defendant had a developmental delay (the chronological age was higher than the developmental age), he was perceived as less guilty than a defendant whose chronological age matched his developmental age.

A pigeon found in a Canadian prison yard with a tiny backpack filled with meth is carrying on a decades-long tradition of avian drug smuggling. The pigeon was captured at the Pacific Institution in Abbotsford, British Columbia, in late December, according to the CBC. Pigeons can fly up to 700 miles a day, according to the Pigeon Control Resource Center. And lest we forget, “Narco Paloma,” a pigeon busted smuggling weed and cocaine into La Reforma, a maximum security prison in Costa Rica in 2015, and then turned into a meme. The bird was turned over to a rehab center afterward—the kind for animals.

Rights group releases scathing report on Canada’s violations of Indigenous rightsOTTAWA — A prominent human-rights group says Canada is failing to address long-standing abuses, delivering a rebuke of what it calls the federal government's inadequate climate policy and violations of the rights of Indigenous people and immigration detainees. The criticisms levelled in the group's annual "World Report" extend to Canada's climate change policy, as well. Human Rights Watch had encouraging words, though, for Canada's support for LGBTQ people, highlighting the federal government's recent commitments to a national action plan to strengthen rights at home and abroad. The federal government says 137 long-term drinking water advisories have been lifted since November 2015, with initiatives underway to address the remaining ones. "Access to clean drinking water is fundamental, and we continue to make progress on our commitment to lifting all remaining long-term drinking water advisories in First Nation communities," the joint statement said.

The retired space veteran will add another notch to his modest acting career through a small part on an episode of the detective series set to air Monday on CBC and CBC Gem. Hadfield plays a self-proclaimed “Rocketman,” who thinks that the populace should instead be embracing the once-in-a-lifetime event. “Can we learn enough in advance and see the symptoms developing that maybe we can head off something really bad happening? I think Murdoch would be a great crewmate on board a spaceship.”Based on novels by Maureen Jennings, "Murdoch Mysteries" follows young detective William Murdoch in a series of stories taking place in Toronto during the 1890s and early 1900s.

They give the public a completely false image of the LGB rights movement & are undermining our rights. As Mondegreen describes it:The activists particularly harassed two women, pushing one to the ground, and blasting them with bullhorns. When it was over, Trianon gushed on Facebook about how she and her followers had successfully stormed the event. But the available evidence certainly does lead to questions about how much of this mobbing at McGill Law School was spontaneous, and how much of it was pre-planned, possibly by law students themselves. Trans rights advocates are denouncing a talk by McGill University's Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism led by a speaker associated with a group they say is "notoriously transphobic and trans-exclusionary."

© David Paul Morris/Bloomberg A large drop in the price of gasoline in December dragged the official U.S. inflation rate down to a 6.5 per cent annual pace, new numbers showed Thursday. The inflation rate in the U.S. decelerated to 6.5 per cent in December, mostly due to much cheaper gasoline. But overall, the decline in gasoline was enough to drag the overall annual inflation rate down to 6.5 per cent from 7.1 per cent. The numbers for December mean that while the official U.S. inflation rate is still more than twice as high as the central bank's target, the annual rate has fallen for six months in a row. "Inflation is cooling as the economy starts to feel the impact of the Fed's earlier rate hikes," Oanda analyst Edward Moya said of the numbers.
